The UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) is a registered charity whose aim is to advance the education of children and young people in mathematics. The UKMT organises national mathematics competitions and other mathematical enrichment activities for 11-18 year old UK school pupils. We were established in 1996 and last academic year over 600,000 pupils from 4,000 schools took part in the three individual ch

allenges, the UK's biggest national maths competitions. Each challenge leads into a follow-on Olympiad round and we run mentoring schemes and summer schools for high performing students as well as training the team of six to represent the UK in the International Mathematical Olympiad. We also run team maths competitions for two age ranges, publish books and organise enrichment seminars for teachers.

The special event recognised the invaluable contribution made by the Trust’s volunteers since its foundation. Through their time, expertise and commitment, volunteers have played a vital role in inspiring young people to develop their mathematical skills and confidence over the past three decades.

British Pupil Wins International Maths Olympiad, Becomes Most Decorated Participant of All Time

Alex Chui, a student representing the United Kingdom at the International Mathematical Olympiad, has become the most decorated Maths Olympiad participant of all time.

Alex, who is in Year 13 at Tonbridge School, came joint 1st with a perfect score of 42/42, earning his fifth Gold medal at this year’s edition in Shanghai.

These 5 Gold medals, along with 2 Silver medals, mean Alex is now the most successful participant of all time in the world’s most prestigious school-age academic competition, which has been running since 1959.

The UK team, entered into the competition by the United Kingdom Maths Trust and supported by Jane Street Europe, was awarded 2 Gold, 1 Silver, and 3 Bronze medals and placed 8th overall out of 117 participating countries.

Alex Chui said, “I really cherished this experience of my last IMO in China, getting to compete alongside my teammates and meet other contestants from around the world. I am very happy to be able to round it off with a perfect score, and now looking forward to life at university.“

Congratulations to Southend High School For Boys, who won UKMT's poster competition by students Bamise, JC, Isacc & Lenny.

Choosing the winners was no easy task, and our judges were incredibly impressed by the quality, originality and enthusiasm on display.

A huge thank you to everyone who took part.
