Community Spotlight 🌱

Permaculture is quietly taking root in all kinds of places.

Across the UK, members of our network are tending gardens, community spaces, learning projects and growing systems that support people, biodiversity and more resilient ways of living.

This month’s Community Spotlight features:
🌱 The Old Hall
🌱 Snapdragons Plymouth
🌱 Green North

Each project reflects permaculture in its own way, through education, food growing, ecological design, community connection and care for the living world around us.

We love seeing the diversity of projects emerging across the network, and we’ll be sharing more member projects each month.

Members can add their own projects to our Permaculture Project Map and may be featured in future spotlights, newsletters and stories: https://buff.ly/yNurXld

“There is an alternative future.”

Today, our CEO Andy Goldring has a letter in , responding to growing conversations around heatwaves, climate disruption and the future of Britain.

The letter highlights the practical work already happening across communities, from food growing and rainwater harvesting to retrofitting homes and rebuilding local resilience, and calls for greater investment in community-led climate action.

Permaculture is not simply about reacting to crisis. It’s about designing systems that help people and ecosystems adapt, recover and thrive over time.

Soil is not something separate from us. It’s part of the systems we depend on every day. From the food we eat to the health of ecosystems, soil connects to all sorts of aspects of life.

In permaculture, this relationship matters. It’s not just about improving soil, but about understanding how our actions shape the systems we are part of.

Over coming weeks, we'll be sharing practical ways to explore soil health - wherever you're growing - ahead of a very special online Soil Clinic in July, where you can bring your questions to a panel of experts.

Taken a Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC)? This global survey is worth a look.

Many people leave a PDC feeling inspired and transformed, but the pathway into applying permaculture professionally can often feel unclear, fragmented or difficult to navigate.

This new research project aims to better understand what happens next:
🌱 What supports people
🌱 What barriers exist
🌱 And how permaculture livelihoods and careers are developing across different contexts

The survey is being led by researchers at Utah State University in collaboration with permaculture practitioners and educators.

It takes around 8-10 minutes to complete, is anonymous, and findings will be shared openly with the wider permaculture community.

If you’ve completed a PDC, you can take part via the link below:

Last chance to join us 🌿

From his 8-hectare stockfree organic farm, Iain Tolhurst has spent decades growing food in harmony with nature - building soil, biodiversity and resilience on land often considered unsuitable for vegetables.

His approach shows what’s possible when ecological balance comes first.

As he puts it:
“The primary product of this farm is the culture of biodiversity - food production is the by-product of that.”

Join us tomorrow evening for our next online Community Campfire, where Iain will explore the importance of soil health and what it takes to build resilient growing systems.

📅 Tuesday 19 May, 6:30-8:00pm (GMT)

Improving soil doesn’t require large-scale change.

Small, consistent actions can help build healthier soil over time by supporting the living systems beneath the surface.

In permaculture, the focus is on working with these processes: protecting soil, feeding it and allowing it to develop naturally.

You don’t need perfect conditions to begin. All it takes is a willingness to observe and take small steps.

Soil holds a memory of what has happened in a place.

It reflects how land has been used - whether it has been cared for, depleted or restored.

But soil is not fixed. With the right conditions, degraded soil can recover. Life returns, structure improves, and systems begin to function again.

In permaculture, this is a core idea: that through thoughtful design and long-term thinking, we can support processes that regenerate soil over time.
