Mary Frances Trust

Mary Frances Trust We’re a mental health & emotional wellbeing charity for adults (16+) in Surrey. All services are free You can also ask a GP, CPN or social worker to refer you.

Mary Frances Trust (MFT) is a mental health and emotional wellbeing charity in Surrey established in 1994 to support adults (16+) who experience any kind of mental or emotional health issues. Mental health issues will affect one in four of us in any one year, yet it remains one of the last taboo subjects in our society. Society’s reaction to mental illness combines with the illness itself can crea

te difficulties in every aspect of life, in particular family and social relationships, money, independence, education, and employment. Our services have evolved over the past years in response to the changing needs and aspirations of people who use our services. However, we remain committed to our founding principles - working in partnership with people who we are supporting, maintaining respectful and equal relationships between them and staff, and fostering a sense of ownership and community. In 2013, we successfully won a bid to become the lead for Community Connections mental health services for Mole Valley, Banstead, Elmbridge, Epsom and Ewell. The Community Connections service has been set up to help people with mental health issues to connect with their local community in a variety of ways to help to build up a sense of wellbeing and build confidence and self esteem. At MFT, we are committed to supporting people experiencing mental health issues to become fully active members of their communities and to have access to all the opportunities this offers. We offer a range of services and activities including:
One-to-one wellbeing support and goal setting
Wellbeing advice and information
Access to physical activities
Art and craft groups
Interest groups and activities which promote social inclusion
Peer support groups
Voluntary work in the community
Sign-posting to other organisations
Mental health crisis support

🎥 Community Connections Video Series

Community Connections is about more than just activities – it's about helping people find the right support, at the right time 💙

Last week, we introduced our free Community Connections service and how it helps people improve their wellbeing through local groups, support and connection.

This week, meet Jack, one of our Community Connections Area Coordinators, who explains what happens after you register.

From your first appointment, we'll take the time to get to know you, your interests, goals and what matters most to you. Together, we'll create a personalised wellbeing plan, help you access the right support, and guide you through your journey while tracking your progress along the way.

Whether you're looking to build confidence, meet new people, try something new, improve your wellbeing, or simply feel more connected, we're here to support you every step of the way.

✨ And the best part? Community Connections is completely free for Surrey residents aged 16+.

A huge thank you to the Bookham & Horsley Rotary Club for hosting a fantastic night of entertainment and fundraising in support of MFT 💙

More than 130 guests enjoyed outstanding performances from the talented students of The Guildford School of Acting, with a programme featuring beloved songs from major West End productions alongside contemporary favourites from artists such as Adele.

The generosity of everyone who attended, together with the raffle held on the evening, helped raise an amazing £1,900 for MFT!

We are so grateful to everyone who came along and supported the event, your support helps us continue making a difference.

The total value of support provided by our 63 volunteers this past year equates to 3.41 additional full-time staff or about £95,000+ in salary.

It would be impossible for us to not only fund but also only employ three staff members to cover the wide variety of skills across the multiple locations, dates and times. We simply couldn't do it without them!

“The true value of the volunteer team is based on the variety of people that offer their support, bringing numerous skills, patience, generosity of spirit and time to support our work.
It is often the little things our volunteers do that make such a positive impact to clients on an individual level which isn’t always measurable by outputs and outcomes but is truly valued by those they assist.” - Matthew, MFT Volunteer Coordinator.

On this Volunteers’ Week, we want to say a huge thank you to our volunteers for the incredible impact they have on our community but also on MFT 🫶

For we’ve asked some of our amazing Volunteers why they volunteer for MFT 🌟

Tom said: “I’ve really enjoyed my time volunteering with Mary Frances Trust. I look forward to every session of the Men’s Group as one of the best bits of my week. Being able to support people in my community brings me joy and a sense of belonging, and I’ve learnt a lot about myself and others whilst volunteering.” Tom helps to facilitate our Online Men’s Group.

Julia said: “I have found volunteering for MFT very rewarding. The aims and incredible achievements of MFT are dear to my heart as I grew up with a close family member who struggled to cope with their mental health. It has been a humbling experience seeing how people manage their challenges and how those with different life experiences and from varied age groups often come together to help support one another.”

Julia helps to facilitate our Saturday Coffee and Social Group and Monday Peer Support Group in Ashtead.

For we’ve asked some of our amazing Volunteers why they volunteer for MFT 🌟

“I started volunteering with MFT because they once helped me when I was going through some tough times. There have been parts of my life where things have felt overwhelming and where I didn’t always feel understood or supported without judgement.

MFT gave me a safe space where I felt heard and seen, and offered support services within the community that proved invaluable. After some time, I found myself in a stronger place and having the ability to now look back and reflect on my own journey and how much support MFT had given me.
I decided I wanted to give something back and be able to be there in ways others had been there for me, so I started volunteering with them.

Volunteering hasn’t just been about giving back, it’s helped me grow too in ways I didn’t think possible (a couple of years ago). I not only enjoy volunteering with MFT but it’s given me the opportunity to turn something once difficult into something positive.

It’s not ‘just’ volunteering, it’s the capability of making a difference, making connections, understanding and being a part of something that genuinely helps people.MFT provides a lifeline for many people in different ways and in different parts of their journey all struggling somewhat. It’s a real privilege to be a part of their volunteering team.”

Kerri helps to facilitate our Coffee & Social Group in Epsom and the Epsom Downs walking group, find out more about our groups: https://www.maryfrancestrust.org.uk/community-connections/

For we’ve asked some of our amazing Volunteers why they volunteer for MFT 🌟

“I was excited to join MFT as a Trustee because I’m deeply committed to building equity within the mental health space and understand the importance of services that truly work for people in their context. I was drawn to MFT’s mission to involve people with lived experience, work in partnership with local services and advocate against stigma — and I’m delighted to contribute my skills and time to support its growth and impact.”

Nina volunteers as part of our Board of Trustees, offering her time and skills to support with the strategic direction of our organisation.
