The UK Government have recently announced they are removing standing charges on gas bills from next year.

While many may be frustrated at paying a daily fee to access fuel (currently around £108 per year), standing charges costs aren't really being removed but being added onto the unit rate you pay instead.

While not confirmed, this looks like it may be just under 1p per kWh of gas use. While this change will benefit those who use lower amounts of gas, those that use more will pay more with the removal of the standing charge. Money Saving Expert suggests the flip point for this will be those who use more than 12,500 kWh of gas per year.

Money Saving Expert has put together an analysis of this policy shift on their website.
