On this national fish and chip day we honour the fishermen whose very hard work feeds the nation, and we remember with love and gratitude the brave souls lost to the sea. Their courage lives on with every catch brought safely home to our tables.

An inaugural remembrance day was held in Hull to honour Headscarf Revolutionaries Lillian Bilocca, Mary Denness, Yvonne Blenkinsop and Christine Smallbone (Christine Jensen MBE). The four women led a successful trawler safety campaign in 1968. Read more at www.fishingnews.co.uk

I am so happy that the story is being taught in schools. For so long it was only in the memories of Hull’s fishing families but now it’s where it belongs, in the classroom. As children learn about Lilly, Yvonne, Mary and Chrissy they grow up knowing that bravery sometimes looks like women standing their ground refusing to be ignored with a community rising behind them. This story matters and will inspire the next generations.
