This Mental Health Awareness Week, we want to highlight something rarely discussed: debt and mental health are closely linked and affect each other.

Debt causes stress, shame, and sleepless nights. It can make people feel isolated and out of control. But mental health struggles also make debt harder to manage. When you are not coping, opening letters feels impossible, bills get missed, and things spiral out of control.

The numbers tell the same story. According to the Money and Mental Health Policy Institute, people experiencing problem debt are three times more likely to have a mental health condition. Nearly half of people experiencing problem debt, 46 per cent, are also living with a mental health condition. And the average debt among people with mental health conditions seeking support stands at around £1,800.

None of this is a personal failing. It is a cycle, a cycle that can be broken, and you deserve to break it.

This week, one of our long-term clients received a Debt Relief Order. This gives them a clean slate and a fresh start. We’re really happy with this outcome because it took a lot of work to get here. Now, we’ll help the client set up bill payments and budgeting so they can build good financial habits.

We unfortunately are not taking on new debt advice clients right now, but we are working hard to reopen our debt advice service so we can help more people soon.

Keep an eye out for our Money365 Roadshow popping up across the City. Over the next few months, our free drop-in sessions will offer local residents budgeting tools, free mobile SIM cards, and much more. Keep an eye on our social media channels for venue announcements shortly.

This week, Money Mentor Louise was out delivering a community session for Mustard Seed, Diocese of York. Louise spoke with the group about our relationship with money and how people can end up in debt.
