Meet our first Fidget Fest provider: Sportsmans Arms Dartmouth, a traditional country pub.

As part of Fidget Fest they are reserving their marquee and play area just for SEND families, so you can enjoy a meal out in a relaxed, judgement-free environment. No explaining meltdowns, no worrying about fussy eaters, no stress if the little ones need to move about between courses.

Imagine a festival where your child never has to mask, hide or cope.

That's Fidget Fest.

This October, The Fidget Project is bringing a brand new kind of festival to South Devon: a sensory-aware festival series designed for neurodivergent and sensory-sensitive children and their families.

No overwhelming crowds you have to brace for. No "just try to sit still." Just spaces built from the ground up to be welcoming, inclusive and genuinely sensory-aware.
Across Torquay, Totnes, Dartmouth, Kingsbridge and Ivybridge, families can expect a full month of experiences including sensory play and fidget tools, creative workshops, music and performance, movement and yoga, forest school activities, family workshops and community events.

Follow along as we reveal dates, venues and providers over the coming weeks, and be part of a festival built for families who deserve places where everyone can take part.

💙 "Being able to have peer support is essential."

That's how one mother of a 9-year-old boy on the pathway for an autism assessment describes what our parent support groups mean to her family. Having a group to attend without judgement, where families can share their children's challenges and celebrate their achievements, is vital for those whose children have sensory processing differences.

A dad inspired by his son has created a free app to help other SEND families find support 💙

Colin Jones built UK SEND Compass after struggling to navigate services for his own children with additional needs.

What started as a personal search for help has now become a free app designed to bring resources, services, and support together in one place for families who often feel lost in the system.

It’s a powerful reminder of how many families are still trying to find their way — and how lived experience can drive real change.

💙 "It was a real game changer for us..."

One of our parents shared this after attending our Oral Health Workshop with her daughter, who has autism. The child-focused, judgment-free approach meant her daughter came away with a whole new outlook — and couldn't wait to brush her teeth, maybe for the first time ever.

This is exactly why we do what we do. Small, sensory-informed sessions can make a huge difference for families navigating everyday challenges most people don't think twice about.

It's wonderful to see organisations thinking about sensory accessibility in such a practical way.

This year, Wimbledon introduced a Family & Sensory Room—a calm, quiet space where families can take a break from the crowds, bright lights and noise before returning to enjoy the Championships.

One mother described how, after a long journey, the space gave her autistic daughter the chance to regulate before heading to Centre Court. Without somewhere like this, she explained, they simply wouldn't have been able to stay for the whole day.

Stories like this remind us that inclusion isn't always about making huge changes. Often, it's about understanding people's needs and making thoughtful adjustments that allow everyone to participate.

At The Fidget Project, we know how valuable sensory-friendly environments can be for children and families, and we're delighted to see high-profile events leading the way.

We hope many more venues choose to follow their example.

ITV News has recently highlighted the challenges facing SEND families — something we recognise deeply through our work at The Fidget Project.

Families regularly share experiences of navigating formal processes, completing required documentation, and waiting for extended periods while decisions are made. During this time, communication can often feel limited or unclear, adding further stress to already complex situations.

For many children, these delays have a real impact on confidence, wellbeing, and access to education.

We fully acknowledge the pressures faced by schools and local authorities, particularly in rural areas like Devon where resources are stretched.

However, even within these constraints, families consistently tell us that clear communication, responsiveness, and follow-through can make a significant difference.

SEND and neurodivergent children have a legal right to an education that meets their needs. Ensuring this right is upheld in practice requires both systemic support and human accountability at every level.

Some things that help children at school can feel so small, they almost feel too simple to ask for.

Like being allowed to take their shoes off in the classroom.

No specialist provision. No lengthy assessment. No waiting list.

Just a teacher who understands that something like tight shoes can be a constant sensory distraction — another demand on a nervous system already working hard.

Sometimes the smallest adjustments make the biggest difference.
