Understanding Dyslexia: From Mechanisms to Practical Support 🧠

When a child is finding something difficult, understanding why can be just as important as knowing what they are struggling with.

At Fidget Fest, we’re delighted to welcome Valentyna Iliana, dyslexia specialist, researcher and practitioner, founder of Dyslexium and PhD in Special Education.

In this practical webinar, Valentyna will introduce the key mechanisms underlying dyslexia and explore how they can affect a child’s learning and communication.

Through practical case studies, participants will look at:

📚 How dyslexia can affect learning and communication
🧠 Why individual profiles matter
💡 Areas we can influence and support
✨ How a better understanding of the child can help us choose more effective ways to support their learning

Did you miss Georgina Turner’s session on 4 October? There’s another opportunity to hear from her at Fidget Fest. 💛

Georgina’s first workshop explored mindfulness without sitting still, looking at how movement, attention and the senses can make mindfulness more accessible for neurodivergent people.

Our founder Lynne joined the session and said:

“Georgina's session was really informative: how mindfulness for ADHDers needs to be moving, needs to be supported with attention to recognising sensations in the body and learning to differentiate thoughts from emotions from sensations/physical feelings. Lots of tips and good ideas. Great open supportive conversation.”

When Everything Becomes Too Much

Have you ever seemed completely fine, until suddenly everything felt too loud, too bright, too demanding or simply too much?

This session will explore how autistic, ADHD and AuDHD people may mask or overlook their sensory needs, and how this can build towards anxiety, irritability, exhaustion, shutdown or meltdown.

Georgina will share ways to recognise earlier signs of sensory overload and begin creating your own personal sensory map.

What if the behaviour is telling you something?

When a child’s behaviour feels challenging, our first instinct can be to focus on stopping the behaviour. But what if we looked at what the behaviour might be communicating instead?

For our Fidget Fest keynote, we’re delighted to welcome Ben Kingston-Hughes for Seeing Through Behaviour to the Child Beneath.

Ben will explore what may be happening underneath challenging behaviour, including overwhelm, anxiety, unmet needs, sensory differences and difficulties with communication or regulation.

This session is for parents, carers and professionals who want to better understand what they are seeing and consider a different way of responding.

Come and spend the day at High Nature, a beautiful 5-acre organic smallholding above the South Devon coast, for our Harvesting Wellbeing Workshop.

There'll be plenty to explore throughout the day:

✨ Gentle yoga, playful movement and nature connection with Abi Jones from Widwise

🏡 Create a miniature magical dwelling using natural materials with Naomi Vincent from Naturemake

🍄 Explore the fascinating world of fungi through art, craft and storytelling with Rosy Prowse

The workshops are designed to be enjoyed at your own pace, with drop-in sessions running from 10am–12pm and 1pm–3pm.

🍴 You can add lunch for £15 per adult / £10 per child, or bring your own picnic.

“But he’s such a lovely boy…”

For Kelly Campbell, this was one of the comments she encountered while navigating her son’s diagnosis.

But as Kelly explains, the two things can coexist. A child can be happy, loving and doing well, while also experiencing the world differently and needing support.

There isn’t one way that neurodivergence looks, and there isn’t always one clear path to diagnosis.

Understanding sensory processing can change the way we understand a child's experience.

At Fidget Fest, Helen-Jane Ridgeway will be running a practical workshop on Sensory Processing Differences, bringing a body-based, trauma-informed perspective to the way children experience sensory input.
