The Women's Holiday Centre Providing affordable holidays for women and children since 1980
About Horton WHC

Fancy coming mid-week?

The Women’s Holiday Centre is a co-operatively run space, which has been providing women and children with affordable holiday accommodation since 1980, especially for families on low incomes. We offer “3 nights for the price of 2”, or 3 people stay for the price of 2 (cheapest stays free) mid-week during term time on request (excluding Friday and Saturday). The Women’s Holiday Centre is based in t

he tiny Yorkshire village Horton-in-Ribblesdale, and is the only collective, not for profit, co-operatively run holiday centre for women and children in the UK. The holiday centre was set up in 1980 as a charitable co-operative, by women involved in feminism and the women’s liberation movement. Since then, this volunteer-run women’s co-op has been making a difference to the lives of thousands of women and children from all over the country, by providing affordable holidays with a sliding scale for payments according to income. We aim to keep the lowest charge for one night, including food, at the daily rate of benefit entitlement. Other low-cost holiday options, such as renting a caravan or camping, can leave a woman feeling more isolated and vulnerable than she does at home, as there are many practical tasks to manage in a smaller space. In contrast, the Women’s Holiday Centre provides a uniquely supportive and laid-back environment, where women staying often socialise, cook and share meals together. The Women’s Holiday Centre is for women, with or without children, on their own, or with friends. Women from all walks of life are welcome and visit regularly. The house offers a safe and friendly environment, where women and children can feel at home and get to know each other. Items such as towels, toiletries, and both adult and children’s spare coats/hats/gloves/wellies etc. are kept at the house so that those using public transport have less to carry. The part B&B, part hostel style accommodation consists of a mix of private and shared bedrooms, plus two sitting rooms, a large playroom, large kitchen and garden. There is a very relaxed and informal self-catering arrangement, with vegetarian and vegan food provided. During mid-week term-times, the house can offer a quiet place that can be ideal for women recovering from various illnesses or stresses. Disabled access is very basic at the moment, and we are currently working to improve this. Please contact us to discuss any particular requirements. If you’d like to know more about what is happening here and how you can get involved, contact us for our newsletter! This is sent out by email approximately once per month and contains details of all the exciting goings on at The Women’s Holiday Centre!

Yep, and not too far away from the lovely WHC. There's plenty to see and discover here. The ancient prehistoric Malham tarn isn't too far away either. Did I mention the lambs?! Ohhhh...the lambs!! Come and have a break...

Malham Cove is a striking limestone amphitheater in North Yorkshire, England, rising about 260 feet high 🏞️. Formed by a massive glacial waterfall at the end of the last Ice Age ❄️, it’s famous for its unique geology and limestone pavements, and is a popular spot for hiking, rock climbing, and breathtaking views.

New secure bike shed at the centre!
We’re delighted to share some brilliant news: we were awarded a grant from the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority’s Sustainable Development Fund to help build a secure bike shelter at the Centre. It’s been a long-requested addition—many guests told us they’d love to bring bikes, but didn’t feel there was a safe place to store them. The shelter is now built: robust and properly secure—so we’re ready to welcome more cyclists to Horton-in-Ribblesdale as a base for wonderful rides.

To help spread the word, please share the news with any women you know who loves cycling or women’s cycling groups you’re part of or know about —we’d love to see more bikes (and riders!) coming through our doors in 2026 and beyond. We are also looking to continue this project by sharing bike route ideas on our website, keep a look out for this in 2026!

We’re also offering a limited run of unique hand-printed lino cuts (4th photo below): £35 posted within the UK, or £30 if you pick up at the Centre. Email us if you are interested!

This new addition to the house makes us a perfect place for women’s cycling groups to book out the entire centre for exclusive, over night use, while the explore the beautiful area on bike.

**Forthcoming photography weekend: Friday 1st – Sunday 3rd May, 2026**

This spring, we have organised an informal photography weekend — a gentle gathering to come together, wander, and see. We’ll explore the beautiful natural surroundings of North Yorkshire near and around Horton-in-Ribblesdale at an unhurried pace, sharing time, conversation, and ways of looking. Bring yourself, your curiosity, and whatever you have that takes photos—a phone, a camera, an old favourite. No pressure, no experience required—just a weekend of noticing, connection, and making images in good company. The specific plans for the weekends will be organised by those who book. Looking forward to seeing you here!

Further dates for photography weekends to follow for summer, autumn and winter 2026.

Feel free to spread the word among your friends, groups and networks for those you think might be interested!

Get in touch with us via the usual phone or email if you'd like to join! 💚📷

Did you know that you can book the Women's Holiday Centre for exclusive use? The centre is great place for informal retreats, workshops, and other group events where you require overnight stay and exclusive use of the whole centre.

The centre is regularly booked as a closed house for women’s wellbeing retreats, gatherings for women’s organisations, and convenings of community-based groups and initiatives. We love having the centre booked out for these activities. We only ask that the activity or event the centre is booked for is strictly not-for-profit and that attendees only pay the price per night as per our pricing scale and at least the minimum rates for closed houses. The price per night includes all the usual provisions. For more see here: https://hortonwhc.org.uk/bookings-and-prices/

The centre leaves it entirely up to the group to organise its own additional costs associated with the activity or event such as transportation, extra food and drink, or activity supplies.

Please get in touch with us via phone or email to discuss your interest and needs. We'd love to book in your group and welcome you all to the house!

**We have the dates set for older boys times in 2026 at the house**

February: Friday 13th – Sunday 15th
April: Monday 6th – Friday 10th
August: Friday 7th – Friday 14th
October: Friday 24th – Monday 27th

These times are set aside for women to be able to bring boys up to their 15th birthday (boys up to their 11th birthday are welcome all year round).

The specific plans and activities for these times very much depend on the women who book, what the boys who come with them would like to do, and what the weather is like. There are loads of options of things to do whatever the season, and interesting places to go locally, such as walks, a castle and woods, waterfalls to explore, etc., and we have a living room with a real fire plus plenty of board games, books, DVDs etc. We also have an area for a bonfire outside in our garden, as well as space for outdoor games and other activities.

Get in touch if you'd like to book on the usual email or phone. For information about other events, please check out our new website

**Special Announcement: new Women's Holiday Centre website**

Warm summer greetings everyone! We are absolutely delighted to let you all know that our new, re-designed website for the centre is up and running: https://hortonwhc.org.uk/

We'd love for you to take a look around it when you have a moment. We hope that it captures the heart and herstory of the centre and just some of what the centre has meant, and continues to mean, to women and children. We will be continuing to strengthen the website in the coming days and weeks, in particular, making it as assessible as possible, alongside adding more content.

We would be really grateful if you could use this opportunity to (re)share information about the centre using our new website with your friends, communities, groups, networks and organisations who you think would be interested in all the centre has to offer. Please feel free to share this post. We would love to see the numbers of women and children coming to stay grow and diversify, and for as many women and children as possible to know about us and to enjoy it for themselves.

Thank you all for your continued support.

In solidarity,

All at the Women's Holiday Centre 💙

If you’d like to support, but are unable to attend the disco, we’d also welcome donations directly to us.
