This morning alongside Horsham District Council we commemorated Merchant Navy Day

Merchant Navy Day
Observed on 3 September to mark the anniversary of the sinking of the first British merchant ship (SS Athenia) in 1939 just hours after WWII was declared. Established as an official day of remembrance in 2000.
It Honours the brave men and women of the Merchant Navy who served during times of war and peace, and acknowledges that merchant seafarers handle a vast majority of the UK's imported and traded goods.

The significance of the bell: in WWII an appeal was launched to raise funds for the war effort during Battle Ship Week: Horsham raised enough to purchase HMS Una a U Class Submarine, this is a replica of her ships bell and was rung 8 time to signify the end of the last watch (duty) this is traditionally used at a sailors memorial.

The Sussex Band of the Royal British Legion (Horsham) are playing on the bandstand in Horsham Park until 4pm.

This morning along with Horsham District Council we laid a wreath on the 44th Anniversary of the Liberation of The Falkland Islands

We are currently in the process of putting together a program of entertainment as part of our Armed Forces Day 2026 Sunday 28th June between 11-3.

If you are a group or know of any local groups; whether that be youth or adult, singing, dancing, music; please get in touch.

As part of our day, we are recognising and celebrating our armed forces with local charities, supporters and organisations who want to share in our support.

On behalf of the Horsham Royal British Legion, we are honored to stand with our Australian and New Zealand comrades to commemorate this sacred day. ANZAC Day is a time to reflect on the courage, endurance, and sacrifice of those who served at Gallipoli and in all conflicts since.
The ANZAC spirit—marked by mateship, resilience, and compassion—is a legacy we hold in deep respect. Today, we remember not only those who gave their lives, but also those who returned forever changed, and the families who supported them. We owe them a debt of gratitude that we must never forget.
As we mark this day together, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting our armed forces community, past and present. Lest we forget."
