LSU helps communities in Malawi become self-sufficient through sustainable development. Working alongside Africa Vision and Malawi Projects.

Love Support Unite (LSU) empowers people to become self-sufficient, with a leg-up rather than a hand-out. Community-based projects that integrate education, enterprise, nutrition, and health, lift communities out of the cycle of poverty into a cycle of sustainability. LSU is a fundraising organization that raises money for sustainable development delivered through partners Africa Vision in Malawi.

Supporting medical outreach, adult literacy, sustainable farming, early childhood development and vulnerable people. Our operational costs for these projects are funded largely through The Malawi Projects. LSU also helps provide funding for Mphatso Children's charity to provide the formula for babies in desperate need of help. It provides emergency relief when required for emergencies such COVID 19, and Cholera outbreak. LSU raises valuable funds though, Love Specs its company selling recycled plastic and paper sunglasses turning lights into rainbow hearts with the message 'change your perception, change the world'

If you've read our latest post, you already know the incredible little human that is Arrow - and his story of turning pain into power. After he and his five-year-old friends hiked an entire mountain last week for kids with disabilities in Malawi, Alice and Nina are now well on their way across a treacherous hike in Ireland, continuing to raise funds for the same cause.

As their legs get wobbly and their feet tired, Nina, Arrow's mum, wanted to share how she and Arrow look back on the past year, and why it means so much to them that children on the other side of the world get a real chance at the same care, love and access to healing, no matter where they're born.

We don't know what would have happened if Arrow's accident had happened in Malawi. But we know that healthcare for disabilities there falls far short of what a child really needs to recover. That's why we're hiking - to raise as much as we possibly can for kids just like Arrow, who, because of where they're born, might not have the same access to care.

Meet Arrow: the 5-year-old turning pain into power!! ❤️

Last year, Arrow - who is Nina's (our co-founder's) child - was supposed to climb Snowdon with us, raising money for children in Malawi. Instead, our lives changed completely. While out on a bike ride, Arrow was hit by a trailer, causing devastating damage to his leg. He then developed a rare and serious infection.

From May until the end of November, we lived in the hospital. It was months of operations, pain, fear, blood tests and antibiotics. Thankfully, with an incredible team of people and access to healthcare, he's now recovering and able to walk again!

Looking back, during those seven months in hospital, we experienced something impossible to forget: the power of having access to the right care, at the right time, from the right people. And it made us ask a question that has stayed with us - what would have happened if Arrow had been injured in Malawi? We don't know for certain. But we know how much he needed, and we know how different access to healthcare and rehabilitation can be.

Now that Arrow is walking again, he wanted to turn his pain from last year into power!! And climb a mountain for children in Malawi, just like his brothers had in previous years.

So last week, we did a pre-climb with his friends. Arrow and his friends climbed with so much determination, strength and power - we wouldn't have believed he could even try this - but here he is! With an amazing group of 4 and 5 year olds who climbed Holyhead Mountain with him. A long way for little legs, all to give children in Malawi a chance.

Now, after Arrow and his friend’s epic climb, Nina, Alice and Arrow's 8 year old brother Sky, are taking on a 3 peaks challenge in Ireland with their partners The Malawi Projects - to continue raising funds for children with disabilities in Malawi - turning Arrow’s pain into something that gives another child a chance.

We're sharing this story because Arrow wants to turn his pain into power - but it's an incredibly hard story to share, for Nina, for Alice, and for everyone who knows and loves Arrow. This past year was the hardest of our lives, but we're grateful for every bit of love this story brings. We just ask that you hold it as gently as we do.

Our Sustainable Family Farms programme gives vulnerable families in Malawi, seeds, fertiliser and manure as a no-interest loan, repaid in maize once the harvest comes in. Each community is growing their own food security. The programme is a leg up not a hand out.

And this season, families at M'ngwizi harvested 309 bags of maize!! Every single one of them paid their loan back in full. Which means that these families go into next season with confidence, growing their own way forward. We're so proud of what this community has built! 🌽

We love this photo sent to us by the amazing Emma who runs Unite & Support Malawi - our sister charity on the ground in Malawi. After a day driving across villages in Malawi to make sure everyone has access to medical care, the team took this group photo. Doctors, nurses, drivers, coordinators - without them none of this would be possible. Our hearts are full - thank you to everyone who gives to projects like this, and to for being our partners so that we can deliver these initiatives.

We talk a lot about our Sustainable Family Farms programme, but what actually is it?

It was an initiative born from the idea that we don’t want to feed into endless aid cycles and only give for the person to then depend on aid again. We spoke to locals, chiefs and experts in the field across Malawi and came up with an idea that hopes to end the cycle of ‘dead aid’.

We provide a family with a start up kit - seeds, tools and fertilisers to use on their land. We then run a training programme for the family on how to grow using permaculture and sustainable methods that work in Malawi and once they are up and running, we make sure that the family has ongoing support to grow their farms so that they can feed more households.

Last month, 15 babies were born at M'bang'ombe Health Centre with complications and they needed assessment, we were able to safely care and assess each one. We are so grateful to all of you, and everyone who supports us and , because your donations made it possible for all 15 babies to be seen at our SEND Rehabilitation Unit!

Early identification is so important for newborns, it honestly changes what's possible for a child's development and it fills our hearts up with love to see how much we can be a small part of someone's livelihood. 💙

Our medical outreach clinics don’t just provide medicine and treatments - they also make sure a fundamental part of their day is spent on education. Doctors, nurses and professional practitioners talk to people about prevention, support and answer any questions people may have regarding illnesses.

The idea is that if people are given access to education on healthcare, on what to do when there is no one around, and on how to prevent certain illnesses - more people will live healthy, happy lives.
