Language please 🙏

You’ll still hear people say sundowning now and again, that old care‑home word for when someone living with dementia gets a bit more tired or unsettled late afternoon. But to be honest, it’s an outdated term from years back, and it doesn’t really match what’s actually happening.

Most of us feel worn out at teatime.
Long day. Busy brain. Light fading. Bit hungry. Bit thirsty.
I’m tired at that time myself, and I’m not exactly ancient.

For people living with dementia, that natural end‑of‑day dip can feel much stronger, they might want a bit of company, a quieter space, or just someone nearby.
That’s not a “syndrome”. It’s simply late‑day tiredness, the same thing the rest of us feel, just turned up several notches

The trouble with the word sundowning is it can make people feel labelled. It can make families worry And it can stop us looking at what the person actually needs in that moment.

So we are choosing clearer words instead, things that make sense to real people:

• late‑day tiredness
• teatime fatigue
• end‑of‑day overwhelm ( good one)

Plain, human language.
No labels.
Just honesty and warmth.

Because at the end of the day, it’s not about the term, it’s about the person.
And if we stay real , we’ll always do better than any old-fashioned word ever could, so let’s look for the need not the name.

Another Busy MIRILI Morning🏃‍♀️

This morning we made our way to the beautiful sandy beach Holiday Park in Llanfwrog to collect the cash raised at their event night for MIRILI organised by the fabulous Sheila Robinson. An amazing £190 raised. We’re so grateful. This is the second year Sheila has put on a night for us, and she still looks cheerful enough to do a third.

From there it was straight to the Post Office to pay it in, then over to Assisted Living to visit one of our MIRILI members.

Next stop: a quick drop‑off of all the lovely accessories donated by Bake Me Happy for us to use — thank you again, the guys loved it. followed by a requested leaflet drop at the GP surgery. We get around😉

Diwrnod prysur eto i MIRILI MÔN

Bore ’ma aethon ni draw i Holiday Park Llanfwrog i gasglu’r £190 gafodd ei godi noson Sheila Robinson — diolch o galon.

Wedyn i’r Swyddfa Bost, Assisted Living, ac i adael yr ategolion hyfryd gafodd Bake Me Happy eu rhoi i ni.

Cwblhau gyda thaflenni yn y feddygfa.

When Shortbread took over MIRILI !

Well… after a much‑needed two‑week shut down, MIRILI MÔN opened the doors this morning and the members greeted us volunteers like long‑lost relatives. Hugs everywhere and plenty of “oh it’s lovely to be back”, you’d swear we’d been gone a year.

Yoga was meant to be on the agenda, but our lovely Katy couldn’t make it today. No bother — because we had a surprise waiting. Bianca from Bake Me Happy messaged to ask if the group fancied decorating some homemade shortbread. Of course we said yes… have you seen her cake cabin and the creations that come out of it.

She flew in before starting work, armed with decorating kits and shortbread the size of saucers. The members loved it even some of the recycling team downed tools to decorate theirs (most just ate them in between upcycling, but we won’t name names).

There was plenty of chat too, after all, they had a fortnight’s worth of gossip to catch up on. A few crafts on the go, a few enjoying a quiet brew in our little café, and 31 happy, smiling people filling the room. We’ve missed every one of them, lovely to see so many back today.

If you were here, tell us what you enjoyed most, and if you weren’t, tell us what you’d like to see next time. We love hearing from you.

Wel… ar ôl y bythefnos o gau, roedd MIRILI MÔN yn fyw heddiw. Croeso mawr gan y criw — cwtshus, gwênau, a lot o “braf bod nôl”.

Doedd Katy ddim ar gael ar gyfer ioga, ond dim ots — roedd syndod melys. Bianca o Bake Me Happy wnaeth hedfan i mewn cyn gwaith gyda bisgedi byrion mor fawr â soseri a’r pecynnau addurno. Wnaeth pawb eu caru… a rhai jest eu bwyta’n syth.

Sgwrs, crefftau, paned yn y caffi bach — a 31 o wynebau hapus. Rydan ni wedi colli’r criw, ac roedd hi’n braf iawn eu cael nôl.

Os oeddech chi yma, dywedwch beth wnaeth chi fwynhau fwyaf. Os oeddech chi ddim, beth fysa chi licio gweld tro nesa.

A small piece that holds something precious - ‘Cadw atgofion’

Some pieces find their way into a home and become part of someone’s story. This little upcycled unit that we sold last week has been given a place of real meaning , dressed with treasured photos, a small vase of flowers, and the warm glow of candle light. We won’t share the details behind it, but we can say this: the woman who bought it is one of the kindest, most generous and bravest souls you could meet. Seeing how she’s made this piece her own meant a lot to us at MIRILI.It’s moments like this that remind us why we keep our work accessible so anyone can have something beautiful that brings comfort, memory, or a bit of light in their home.

Mae rhai darnau’n mynd i gartref newydd ac yn dod yn le tawel i atgofion.Mae’r uned fach yma bellach yn dal lluniau annwyl, blodau bach, a golau cannwyll cynnes.Dydyn ni ddim yn rhannu’r stori y tu ôl iddo, ond mae’r fenyw a’i prynodd yn berson hynod garedig ac hael.Mae gweld y darn yn dod yn rhan o’i chartref yn golygu llawer i ni yn MIRILI.

Tribute to Two Remarkable (and Slightly Bonkers) Ladies

MIRILI MÔN would like to pay tribute to two incredible women who have already raised nearly £1,800 for us on GoFundMe — and who are now preparing for a wing walk. Yes, an actual wing walk. Not the sofa‑based practice version, though that photo deserves its own award.

Gwenda
Gwenda is taking on this challenge in memory of her late husband, Llew — a lovely, thoughtful man who spent time with MIRILI and left a lasting impression on everyone who met him.
Gwenda herself is one of those quietly brave people who never make a fuss, just get on with things. She volunteers with MIRILI, bringing calm wisdom, life experience and the sort of empathy you can’t teach. And now she’s climbing onto the wing of a plane. As you do.

Beth
Beth arrived at MIRILI like a small tornado — full of energy, enthusiasm and the ability to chat to absolutely everyone within a five‑mile radius. A whirling dervish, but in the best possible way. She connected with the group instantly and hasn’t stopped since.

We honestly can’t thank them enough for choosing MIRILI, and for organising this wing walk on the 26th of September. It takes planning, patience, and a sense of humour — especially when your training involves balancing on a sofa arm pretending it’s a Boeing.

This is simply a tribute, not an ask for donations.
A heartfelt thank you from all of us at MIRILI MÔN.

MIRILI MÔN eisiau talu teyrnged i Gwenda a Beth — sydd wedi codi bron £1,800 ac yn mynd i wneud wing walk. Ie… ar adain awyren. (A do, mae’r llun ar y soffa yn wir.)

Gwenda
Yn gwneud hyn er cof am Llew — dyn annwyl a fu gyda ni yn MIRILI ac sy’n aros yng nghalon pawb. Mae Gwenda ei hun yn berson tawel, dewr, ac yn dod â doethineb a charedigrwydd i’r grŵp. A nawr… mae hi’n mynd ar adain awyren. Fel ma’ chi’n neud.

Beth
Daeth Beth i MIRILI fel gwynt o egni — siarad efo pawb, symud fel troellwr bach, ac yn ffitio i mewn ar unwaith. Dim stop arni.

Diolch enfawr iddyn nhw am ddewis MIRILI ac am drefnu’r wing walk ar 26 Medi. Mae’n cymryd trefnu… a digon o hiwmor.

Dim cais am a***n — jest diolch o galon gan bawb yn MIRILI MÔN.
