The penultimate film of this season is โ€˜Drugstore Cowboyโ€™, a 1989 black comedy directed by Gus Van Sant and based on the autobiographical novel by James Fogle. The film stars James Dillon, Kelly Lynch and Heather Graham. It follows a group of nomadic drug addicts in 1971 Portland, Oregon. The film received universal significant acclaim from the critics, with praise for its performances and dark humour, and in the years since its original release, has developed a cult following. Scoring 97% on the Rotten Tomatoes review aggregator, the critics consensus reads, โ€œDrugstore Cowboyโ€ takes us into a violent, transient world with, contemplative style.โ€

As usual the doors will open at 7pm with a fully licensed bar, the film starting at 7.30pm. Hope to see you there!

A reminder that Tarset First Thursday Film's contribution to this yearโ€™s Tyne Valley Film Festival will take place at the village hall tonight, Thursday 19th March.

The film is โ€˜Wicked Little Lettersโ€™, a 2023 period black comedy mystery film starring Olivia Coleman, this yearโ€™s Best Actress Oscar winner Jesse Buckley and a host of other British legends of film such as Timothy Spall and Eileen Atkins. Based on the Littlehampton libels of the 1920s, it follows an investigation into the anonymous author of numerous crudely insulting letters sent to the residents of the seaside town. The film received positive reviews, the critics consensus reading, โ€œthanks to a strong cast that leans into the story's humorous side, โ€˜Wicked Little Lettersโ€™ is a diverting comedyโ€.

As is customary with the Film Festival, we try and add a little something extra to the evening for your entertainment. So we will kick the evening off with โ€˜Wicked Little Letters Sweary Bingoโ€™ based on phrases from the film script. The film features very strong language so if you are of a sensitive disposition and offended by liberal use of the F-word, you have been warned!

The doors will open as usual at 7pm, with a licensed bar as usual. The entertainment will start at 7.30pm. Hope to see you there!

This monthโ€™s First Thursday film is another personal recommendation, 'Dean Spanleyโ€™. This 2008 surreal period comedic tale of canine reincarnation explores the relationships between father and son and master and dog. It was long listed for BAFTAs for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Peter Oโ€™Toole, who received a standing ovation at the gala premiere. So come along to see โ€œan offbeat, whimsical, period-set shaggy dog story with daffy performances from Sam Neill and Peter Oโ€™Tooleโ€!

As ususal, the doors open at 7pm with licensed bar, the film starting at 7.30pm. Hope to see you there!

Januaryโ€™s First Thursday Film is Once, a 2007 Irish romantic musical drama about two struggling musicians in Dublin who come together by chance and decide to collaborate on writing songs, which happen to reflect the story of their developing relationship. But where will it lead, youโ€™ll have too come along and find out!

The film received critical acclaim including the 2008 Independent Spirit Award for Best Foreign Film and the protagonistsโ€™ song โ€œFalling Slowlyโ€ won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. The film soundtrack received a Grammy nomination. Steven Spielberg has been quoted as saying, โ€œa little movie called Once gave me enough inspiration to last the rest of the yearโ€, so a good choice to kick off the new year.

As usual the doors will open at 7pm with bar available, the film will start at 7.30pm. Hope to see you there.

A reminder that this monthโ€™s First Thursday Film is this Thursday 11th December. The film is โ€™The Straight Storyโ€™, a 1999 biographical road drama directed by David Lynch. It is based on the true story of Alvin Straightโ€™s unusual 1994 journey across Iowa and Wisconsin to visit his estranged brother. Unlike Lynchโ€™s usual surrealist adult themed movies, this one is unique in that it received a โ€˜family friendlyโ€™ rating so probably a good choice for the run up to the festive season.

The film was a critical success and received a nomination for the Palme dโ€™Or at the 1999 Cannes Festival. Richard Farnsworth received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor, becoming the oldest nominee in the category at the time, for his portrayal of the elderly World War II veteran.

As usual, the doors will open at 7pm with a bar and the film starts at 7.30pm. Hope to see you there.
