Where are we with the B4RN project?
Progress continues with the Hexhamshire B4RN) project thanks to the commitment of our community, volunteers and supportive local landowners. It is hoped that Phase 1, to lay fibre cables to connect to those already installed in Allendale to a cabinet at Whitley Chapel, will start this summer. Progress is partly determined by demand. If you live in Hexhamshire and have not yet done so, register for a connection by entering your postcode at www.b4rn.org.uk/b4rn-north-east/hexhamshire
How is the project funded?
B4RN projects are mainly funded by the government’s Gigabit Voucher Scheme and the amount received depends on how many properties in the community sign up and go live with the service. However, B4RN doesn’t receive the government funds upfront, only after each property is connected, and the vouchers are not designed to cover 100% of the cost of building the project. The government expect the community to raise funds itself by applying for grant funding and seeking investment from businesses and individuals in the community. This is where your help is needed!
How can I help deliver life-changing broadband to our community?
Individuals, companies and organisations can purchase shares in B4RN from as little as £100 up to £100,000. You will become a member of B4RN, have the option to vote at the AGM and have a say in the future of B4RN. Annual interest is paid in additional shares or cash, with a current rate of 5%, which is attractive compared to the rate paid on current fixed term savings accounts. The shares do not change in value. The expectation is that shares are held for a three-year period. You can only sell your shares back to B4RN. You get your money back at the same rate you paid, plus interest.
In addition, B4RN are currently offering the following incentives for investments of £1,500 or more:
• Free connection (typically saving £60)
• Complimentary B4RN broadband as follows:
o £1,500 - £2,499 – two months free
o £2,500 - £4,999 – 4 months free
o £5,000+ - 6 months free.
At this stage of the Hexhamshire project B4RN are seeking Pledges from the community. That is, an indication of an intent to buy shares when the project progresses to delivery. No funds are required at this stage and it is not legally binding.
How do I make a Pledge?
The easiest way is to fill in and submit the pledge form online from B4RN’s website: www.b4rn.org.uk/pledge. The completed form is sent to you by email with instructions as to how to digitally sign. It is automatically returned and you will receive an email with a copy of the signed pledge form. If you’d prefer, you can download and print off a paper pledge form to complete, sign and post back to B4RN.
Once the project advances to delivery phase, you will receive a request to convert your pledge to a share investment, and make a payment for the shares you wish to purchase.
