We are auditioning soon for our October play:

LADIES’ DAY is a comedy-drama, written by Amanda Whittington. It is set in Yorkshire, during the Summer of 2005.. when due to the redevelopment of Ascot racecourse, the ‘Royal meeting’ is relocated to York.!

Here you meet Pearl, Jan, Shelley & Linda.. Four Yorkshire lasses, who live relatively mundane lives, packing fish in a factory for a living. However, due to Pearl’s decision to take early retirement, they decide to ditch their overalls for a day of posh frocks, hats and fascinators and attend Ladies’ Day at the races.!

The script tackles with how the four Ladies navigate life, personal and financial struggles, friendships and strained relationships, secrets and missed opportunities.. but on the day of the races how a few drinks, a few bets and a bit of frankness and flirting provide hope for the future.!

The play is full of witty and authentic dialogue, packed with humour and pathos.. Think Victoria Wood’s ‘Dinnerladies’ with a touch of John Godber’s ‘Bouncers’.. and you’ll get the jist.!

The play will be directed by Mike Kelsall, and he is looking for five versatile actors (4 female and 1 male) all capable of holding strong Yorkshire accents. The characters and an idea of playing ages are as follows:-

Pearl - The leader and matriarch of the group, had enough and ready for early retirement (mid-fifties).

Jan - The sensible one, a Mother who worries about her daughter.. but ready to cut loose (mid-forties).

Shelley - She’s young, glamorous and ambitious.. seeking a better life, and a man to provide it (mid-twenties).

Linda - Well she’s.. quiet.. shy.. naive.. oh, and a big fan of Tony Christie (mid-twenties).

Joe / Pat / Fred / Jim / Kevin & Barry - Multiple cameo roles with varying accents and personas to be played by one male actor (any age).

The play will run from 28th to 31st October at Kingsley Community Centre..
