As a musical theatre society with a history spanning more than 100 years, HOPS has been privileged to meet thousands of people along the way: performers, backstage teams, friends and audiences. Over the years, their memories become part of the rich tapestry of joy that theatre brings to our lives. But every so often, someone comes along who stands out from the crowd. Not because they seek the limelight, but because of the person they are. Gary was one of those rare diamonds who shone so brightly, both on stage and off.
His kindness, his wonderful sense of humour and his genuine empathy and understanding of others touched so many lives. Gary had a rare gift for making people feel welcome, valued and, above all, comfortable in his company. His self-deprecating humour could put a smile on anyone’s face, and his warmth made him someone you were always pleased to see.
Gary leaves behind a remarkable legacy of memorable performances, far too many to mention, and so many of them with HOPS. Yet, for all his talent on stage, it was the man himself who made such a lasting impression. He was loved by so many across the amateur theatre world that it would be difficult for any one society to claim him as their own. Wherever Gary performed, he had a way of making you feel that he belonged there, that he was part of your family, and that you were part of his. That was one of his many special qualities: Gary somehow managed to belong to everyone, while making each of us feel that we had a little piece of him for ourselves.
His zest for life was infectious. At times, his ability to remain positive in the face of adversity was almost bewildering, but that was Gary. Whatever life threw at him, he continued to find reasons to smile, to laugh and to enjoy the company of those around him. He reminded us, simply by being himself, of the importance of making the most of every opportunity and cherishing the people who share our journey.
Gary lived and breathed theatre, a passion he shared with Sally. Together, they have given so much of themselves to the theatre community, both through their own performances and through their commitment to the world they loved. Gary’s talent, experience and natural ability to entertain brought joy to countless audiences, but it was his generosity of spirit, his humour and his friendship that made him truly unforgettable.
Gary’s passing leaves an enormous hole in our theatre family. We have lost a much-loved performer, a dear friend and a genuinely lovely man whose presence enriched the lives of those fortunate enough to know him. The outpouring of love and affection following his passing speaks volumes. It is a testament to the thousands of people whose lives he touched and to the memories that will continue to bring smiles, even through the tears.
Our thoughts, love and heartfelt condolences are with Sally and all Gary’s family at this incredibly difficult time. We cannot begin to imagine the depth of their loss, but we hope they can draw some comfort from knowing just how deeply Gary was loved, how much he meant to so many people, and how fondly he will be remembered. He leaves behind a legacy not only of wonderful performances, but of friendship, kindness and countless happy memories that will live on in the hearts of so many.
Gary, thank you for everything. Thank you for the laughter, the performances, the friendship and all those wonderful moments, both on stage and off, that we will treasure forever. Thank you for being someone who made our theatre family a little brighter simply by being part of it.
The curtain may have fallen on your final performance, Gary, but your place in our hearts will never be empty. You will be missed more than words can say, remembered with enormous affection and celebrated always for the wonderful man you were.
Rest peacefully, Gary. Until we meet again.❤️
