Did you know that The Beatles famously performed in Harrogate back in 1963? Or that a rock band actually named their second album Valley Gardens?

At our meeting on Wednesday 16th September, guest speaker Derek Shelmerdine will explore the local, national and international stars who graced our town's stages during the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. As the author of Rock’n’Roll Unravelled and a regular music broadcaster on BBC Radio York, Derek will uncover the venues, the artists, and the moments that put Harrogate on the musical map.

Join us at The West Park Centre (on the corner of Victoria Avenue) from 7pm for refreshments before the talk begins at 7.30pm.

You can reserve your spot online via the link in the first comment.

Looks like it could be a wet day on Wednesday so why not come along to the next Royal Hall Open Day and enjoy a tour of Harrogate's Glittering Palace of Gold at either 11am or 2pm. We do recommend booking by visiting the Royal Hall Restoration Trust website. It's great place to be on a rainy day. Doors open at 10am and close at 4pm.

A projection box was constructed at the rear of the Dress Circle of the Kursaal (Royal Hall) shortly after opening and films were one of the main attractions in the Hall until well into the 1930’s. It was Harrogate's first cinema. A lighting and sound control box occupying the same area has now replaced this.

Our next Royal Hall Open Day is on Sunday 30th August between the hours of 10am and 4pm. There are guided tours at 11am and 2pm and we do recommend booking. Go to https://royalhallrestorationtrust.org.uk/ , select the Visit Us page and follow the instructions to book. Entry is free and all we ask as a charity is that a small donation be considered. Find us on Ripon Road in Harrogate. HG1 2SY.

The Kursaal (Royal Hall) performers where very varied. On the 3rd August 1903 there was Paul Cinquevalli 'The Incomparable Juggler', on 15th August 1903 Arthur Roberts, comedian, 28th August 1903 Ferruccio Busoni, pianist and 14th September 1903 Coleridge Taylor, composer. But then the Kursaal is a place of entertainment and not a theatre due to its versatility.

Join us tomorrow 16th August when the fab volunteers of the Royal Hall Restoration Trust will be hosting another open day between 10am and 4pm. Entry is free. Take a tour at 11am or 2pm and learn about 'Captain' Woodward and his performing sea lions and the Jeyes fluid! Find us on Ripon Road in Harrogate. HG1 2SY.

Julian Clifford leader of the Municipal Orchestra at the Kursaal (Royal Hall) regularly invited the worlds' greatest artists such as Fritz Kreisler, Dame Nellie Melba, Busoni, Paderewski and Anna Pavlova to perform in Harrogate.

Find out more about Julian Clifford and the Municipal Orchestra by taking one of our very popular tours. Spaces are still available on the 11am and 2pm tours on Sunday 16th August. We do recommend booking. Go to https://royalhallrestorationtrust.org.uk/ to reserve a place.
