Harpenden Lions were delighted to welcome Harry Folgate from the Willow Foundation to our recent meeting, where we proudly presented a £2,000 cheque to support their incredible work.

This donation was raised through our Easter Egg raffle across Harpenden pubs — a huge thank‑you to every venue that took part and to everyone who donated so generously.

Harry shared the moving story behind the charity, founded by former Arsenal goalkeeper Bob Wilson and his wife Megs in memory of their daughter, Anne. The Willow Foundation provides Special Treats and uplifting experiences for young people aged 16–40 living with life‑threatening illnesses — creating precious moments for them and their loved ones.

Thank you again to our wonderful community for helping us support such a meaningful cause. 💛🦁

🌟 Celebrating Our President, Mark Deacon! 🌟

We’re incredibly proud to share that Harpenden Lions President, Mark Deacon, has been honoured with the Harpenden Town Council Award of Merit — one of the highest civic recognitions for outstanding voluntary service in our community.

At the presentation, Mark spoke about the heart of Lions clubs — that “when Lions come together for the good of humanity there is nothing that cannot be achieved” — and highlighted the amazing work our club has delivered this year. From supporting the St Francis Hospice Christmas Tree Collection and the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, to running local tin-shakes that helped us donate £10,129 to good causes since December, including many local schools through our Youth Support programme.

Mark reaffirmed our commitment to making a real difference in Harpenden and the surrounding villages — and even extended an invitation to anyone who might like to get involved and join our club.

Outgoing Mayor Beth Fisher and Councillor Jane Ray praised the Lions’ ongoing impact, calling the award a fitting recognition of the dedication and community spirit shown by everyone involved.

👏 A huge congratulations to Mark — and thank you to all our volunteers who make “We Serve” a reality every day.

✨ A Wonderful Lions Club Evening with Lexie Trim ✨
Last night we were lucky enough to welcome Lexie Trim to our Lions Club social evening, where she shared the inspiring story behind her chemo bags project. These thoughtful care bags bring comfort and a little brightness to people going through chemotherapy, filled with items that truly make a difference during treatment.
We were proud to donate £500 to support Lexie in creating even more bags for those who need them. Her passion and kindness are exactly what community spirit is all about.
If you’d like to support Lexie’s incredible work, you can help in two ways:
💛 Donate via JustGiving: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/Lexie-chemo-bags
💛 Purchase items from her Amazon Wishlist: https://www.amazon.co.uk/hz/wishlist/ls/2BLDI607KTDM9/ref=nav_wishlist_lists_1
Every contribution, big or small, helps her continue this meaningful project. Thank you, Lexie, for everything you do.

Harpenden Lions: Supporting Our Local Environment

🌿 The Harpenden Lions have been busy championing our local environment! Teaming up with the Town Council’s environmental programme, we got stuck into wetland planting at Rothamsted Park - creating new habitats to help wildlife and the whole community thrive.

🦋 Over on Harpenden Common, a true ecological treasure boasting over 400 plant and animal species, we joined forces with Alex Melson (Senior Green Space Development Officer). By cutting back brambles and blackthorn, we’re helping to protect the Common from encroachment and shading—giving rare and delicate species the chance to return.

🌱 Among our discoveries was a tiny Adder’s Tongue Fern, just 5 cm tall, found tucked away in a quiet corner. It’s a great sign for local biodiversity, and with continued care and more open space, we’re hoping to see more of these elusive ferns in the future.

💚 The efforts of the Harpenden Lions show just how powerful community action can be in protecting our green spaces for generations to come. By working hand in hand with the Town Council, we’re making a real difference—one bramble, blackthorn, and rare fern at a time!

Would you like to make a difference in your community and help protect local nature? The Harpenden Lions are always looking for passionate volunteers to join our efforts. www.harpenden-lions.co.uk
