Challengers Challengers is a charity dedicated to transforming the lives of disabled children, young people and their families through the power of play ✨

Challengers is a registered children's charity, established in 1979, dedicated to providing exciting and challenging play and leisure opportunities for disabled children and young people. We do this through our play and youth centres in Guilford and Farnham and through our range of community based projects across Surrey and, increasingly, the surrounding areas. A significant benefit of our service is that it provides families with short-breaks during high pressure times e.g. at the weekend or during the school holidays, enabling them to do ‘ordinary’ activities such as shopping or spending time with their other children. Families have told us that this lifeline of support keeps them strong.

Today is Developmental Language Disorder or DLD Awareness Day

Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) affects around 1 in 14 people, making understanding and using language more difficult.

Because DLD is often hidden, the people living with it can be overlooked.

DLD Awareness Day shines a light on this common disability and the need for greater understanding and support. This year’s theme, “Together for DLD”, reminds us that everyone has a part to play in creating a more inclusive world.

Please help spread the word as greater awareness can help people with DLD feel understood, included and supported.

As the weather turns cold and dreary, here is something sunny to look forward to in 2027! ☀️

A remarkable story of activism, and a fight for inclusion that continues today. 🧡

Our Digital Marketing and Communications Officer, Arijana, recently attended the BFI London Film Festival Gala screening of Being Heumann, a film about pioneering disability rights activist Judy Heumann.

Widely known as “the mother of the Disability Rights Movement”, Judy’s story resonates with the barriers disabled children and their families still face every day.

As someone with a lived experience of cerebral palsy, Arijana shares her thoughts on the film, Judy’s legacy and why the fight for equal opportunities remains so important.

A huge thanks to Grahame Boniface and his brilliant team at Farnham & District Model Railway Club for creating this year’s charity layout, Challengers Wood!

This year Grahame’s team built a stunning 4’×3’ N-gauge scene set in the early 1960s: a rural village with farm, lake, water mill, station and goods yard.

Everyone who attended this weekend loved the Challengers Wood display and the youngest train enthusiasts were thrilled to get some hands on time with the display.

Thanks to Graham and his team, they managed to raise an amazing £1,503.38 for Challengers, which will go a long way to helping us support disabled children and young people so they have a place to play, make friends, build social skills and find a place where they are accepted exactly as they are.

This World Mental Health Day, we are looking back at our amazing Orange October Guildford parkrun.

A huge thank you to everyone who turned out in their brightest orange, laced up their trainers and ran (or walked!) not just for your own wellbeing, but to help us support disabled children and young people and their wellbeing.

Thanks to your incredible generosity, we raised £538.60!

As we mark World Mental Health Day, we are reminded that supporting Challengers means supporting the emotional and mental health and wellbeing of the disabled children and young people we work with. Inclusive play isn’t just fun, it’s vital for confidence, friendships and feeling valued and belonging.
