Our final guest speaker profile for our Just Pause peri/menopause session on Thursday 18th June is Dr Emma Ward who is a specialist in the field.

Graduated from Manchester Medical School over 21 years ago and working as a GP for the last 19 years, Dr Emma has always been a strong advocate of health promotion, disease prevention and healthy ageing.

Clinically, her passion leaned towards women’s health and as such undertook further study in this field; obtaining the Diplomas DRCOG from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecology, and the DFFP from the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Health.

Around 12 years ago, becoming aware that training undertaken to this point was not enough in the field of Menopause, Dr Emma found the British Menopause Society (BMS), completing the Principles and Practice of Menopause Care and going on to achieve their highest level of certification, the Advanced Certificate in Menopause Care.

Additionally, through the International School of Gynaecological and Reproductive Endocrinology (ISGE), Dr Emma is recognised as an Advanced Practitioner, on the topics of Hormone Therapies for Menopause and Healthy Ageing, Hormonal Contraception and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).

Dr Emma has published academic papers on Sarcopenia with the British Menopause Society, the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists and presented a poster at the International Conference on Frailty and Sarcopenia Research.

Rebecca Lalley - "I qualified as a gym instructor almost ten years ago - a complete change, post-children, following a long career in fashion retail. I quickly added further qualifications, including group indoor cycling and kettlebells, and began teaching at what was then Glossop Leisure Centre. In 2019 I became a personal trainer, primarily focused on helping women find confidence in lifting weights, although I do train male clients too!"

In 2023 Rebecca gained her level 3 mat Pilates qualification, and her focus began to shift when she further trained in Spinecare Pilates with Cherry Baker. Being a perimenopausal woman herself - and increasingly attracting women in a similar position as clients she started to recognise the importance of maintaining muscle, protecting our bones, and supporting stability and mobility for as long as possible into old age.

Nowadays her personal focus is on training across different disciplines to prepare the body for a strong, healthy future and encourages the same in her clients. It's never too late to get started, or to return to exercise!
