Pollution is a huge problem in our valley, which is why last week kids from Dinting School were on the street making motorists aware of the hazards they can cause. Police, members of GAST: Glossopdale Action for Sustainable Travel, staff and pupils from Dinting Primary School undertook speed checks, tested cars parked on the pavement had left enough room for buggies and wheelchairs to pass, and issued notices they had made themselves to cars idling while they waited to collect their kids. The kids were thoroughly engaged and focused on the task in hand – well done to you all. Drivers responded with waves and t***s. Hopefully for the future they will remember the kids’ messages and act on them.

Thinking today of Pat Ellison, who spent many years of her life fighting against the Mottram-Tintwistle bypass and would be greatly saddened so know that the Glossop Spur has been approved. Here's one of the interviews she did for the Manchester Evening News when we were fighting the scheme back in 2010.

PAT Ellison fondly remembers the days when she used to paddle barefoot in the streams that trickle through the Longdendale valley. Splashing around in streams was just one of the many adventures Pat enjoyed during her childhood growing up in Hollingworth.

It's just over 14 years ago that we issued this press release in response to the announcement that the Government was pulling funding for the Mottram-Tintwistle bypass.
https://saveswallowswood.org.uk/news/2010-11-01.shtml

In it we called for the local council to put their efforts into alternative solutions. Instead they remodelled the scheme, taking out the more controversial parts (the National Park) to bring you a road scheme by stealth. No application was ever made to the Government’s Sustainable Transport Fund. No serious consideration, on the scale given to the road scheme, has ever been put into alternatives.
