Today(1 September) is the first day of the school year in Ukraine and is incredibly important.

Known traditionally as Knowledge Day (День знань / Den Znan) it’s celebrated as a major national event rather than just an ordinary return to classes.

🔔The First Bell Ceremony - Schools traditionally gather for a special assembly. A final year student carries a brand new first year on their shoulder, and the young child rings a bell to symbolise the official start of the academic year.

🧵Dressing Up - Children attend dressed in their absolute best. Over the years, this has evolved into children wearing traditional, beautifully embroidered Ukrainian shirts (vyshyvankas) and ribbons.

💐Teacher Gifts - Students traditionally carry large bouquets of flowers to present to their teachers as a token of respect.

‼️The reality of ever present attacks though, see more and more classrooms and schools moving to underground locations. Many still learn remotely.

Russia is using high-speed, jet-powered drones and ballistic missiles to systematically destroy Ukraine's civilian infrastructure, energy grid, and food supply hubs to make life in the capital unsustainable ahead of the winter.

On 28 August 2026, Ukraine’s Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food - Taras Vysotskyi - said Russian strikes had destroyed “roughly speaking, 90%” of the modern logistics infrastructure used by food retail chains.

Mainly large distribution centres and warehouses, not every food warehouse in the country.

He stressed there is no threat of famine or a systemic physical shortage of basic foods. Production capacity is sufficient for domestic demand.

Retailers and suppliers are switching to direct (“on-the-wheels” / just-in-time) deliveries from producers, decentralising stocks, and using alternative routes and smaller storage sites.

This is slower, more complex and more expensive, and the range of products on shelves may shrink in some stores, but basics should remain available.
