It's ! 🐟🐋 This month, join us to learn more about the world under the waves, with a presenter-led show in our Planetarium and a unique Meet the Scientist session for schools!

Get involved in our Science Centre:
🌊 As part of our immersive galleries, explore our Discover the Deep exhibit where you can find out more about Scotland's role in deep-sea discovery and take part in hands-on activities exploring life under the waves.
🌊 Enjoy our presenter-led Planetarium show 'Under Pressure', showing daily throughout June, where we're taking a deep dive into the global ocean to explore hidden ecosystems and the work of dedicated marine scientists. We'll also take a moment to ponder on our ability to shape the future of the ocean.

Get involved as a School:
🌊 Calling all teachers! 📣 Tomorrow, 9th June, your class can take part in our free, online 'Meet the Scientist' session about ocean science! Daily shows in our Planetarium this June! Don't miss these 30 minute shows as part of your Dynamic Earth admission, or as a standalone experience. 🔭

☀ What's Up: Summer Skies | Presenter-led Show
In the latest version of our flagship live Planetarium show ‘What’s Up?’ we’ll go stargazing in the summer sky, and take a look at the incredible Artemis II mission! In our Planetarium, we're going to (temporarily!) delete the Sun so we can stargaze in summer skies of perfect darkness to spot stars, planets and galaxies.

🌋 Under Pressure | Presenter-led Show
Come with us as we take a deep dive into the global ocean; we’ll explore dark, hidden ecosystems and see the collective efforts of hundreds of marine scientists and engineers. We’ll also ponder on our ability to shape the future of this global ocean we all depend on.

🐝 We Are Guardians | Dome Film
Explore the ecosystems of our world that are intrinsically connected. Discover how, with the help of satellites, we can examine the links between human activities and climate change.

✨Experience our We are Guardians show with BSL interpretation as part of our daily schedule, with additional BSL interpreted screenings available upon request.

Happy Birthday James Hutton 🎉 We’re going to need more candles, because today marks the 300th birthday of Edinburgh-born scientist James Hutton! Hutton introduced ground-breaking ideas that revealed the immense age of our planet and laid the foundation for modern geology.

In the late 1700s, Hutton presented evidence that the Earth was far older than anyone had thought before. Hutton proposed that geological processes - erosion, sedimentation, volcanic activity - had been operating slowly and continuously for vast periods of time. Hutton’s revelation became known as ‘Deep-Time’.

Hutton’s observations included a key site – known as ‘Hutton’s Section’ - at the Salisbury Crags right next to Dynamic Earth! Get involved in the birthday celebrations with us:

🌍 Say hello to James Hutton and discover more about his theories in our ‘Scotland’s Time Lords’ gallery as part of your Science Centre experience all year round.

🌍 Young explorers will discover Hutton’s theories at our Summer Outdoor Club throughout July in Holyrood Park.

🌍 Enjoy a special digital firework display before your presenter-led live show in our Planetarium.

🌍 Don’t miss ‘Whisky Under the Stars’ as part of the Edinburgh Fringe, which will give adults the chance to toast Hutton in an out of this world experience.

🌍 In September, children at our Dino’s Science Club can get involved in rock detective sessions to celebrate this amazing tercentenary.

📣 New Planetarium show alert! 📣 From 1st June, in 'What's Up: Summer Skies' we’ll go stargazing in the summer sky, and take a look at the incredible Artemis II mission! ☀

🔭 Edinburgh sits so far north – 56 degrees north of the equator – that our summer skies never get fully dark. There is always a little bit of sunlight spilling up over the horizon which means that stargazing in Scotland in summer is… really not that great! But, in the Planetarium, we can sidestep nature. We’ll delete the Sun (temporarily!) so we will be able to stargaze in perfect darkness: spotting stars, planets and perhaps a galaxy or two!

🚀 Plus – we’ll be delving into the incredible Artemis II mission which took four astronauts further into space than any other human, around the moon and back home again. We will take a look at some of our favourite moments from their mission and, of course, some of the amazing photographs they took along the way.

🗓 Showing daily from 1st June – 30th August.
⏰ Take a look at our Planetarium Schedule to find out show times during your visit.
