Healthwatch Essex

Healthwatch Essex Healthwatch Essex is an independent charity. We use your voice to improve health and care in Essex.

We are here to make sure your views on health and social care services in Essex are heard so that they can be improved. Through our network of volunteers, we can be the “eyes and ears” of the people of Essex – from Harlow to Harwich, Saffron Walden to Castle Point, and everywhere in between. We also work with existing voluntary and community groups to find out what matters to our citizens. And, mo

st importantly, we have powers in law which give us influence. We will feed back what we discover to the authorities, who have a legal responsibility to use our findings to shape and improve services. This means you can be reassured that your views really do count. House rules

At Healthwatch Essex, research underpins everything that we do. Every conversation we have, every story we listen to, every survey we design and every project we conduct helps us to better understand people’s experiences of health and care. Research allows us to turn these experiences into evidence, identify themes and make recommendations that can improve local services.

As we mark this year’s Day, we’re celebrating the many ways that research shapes our work. We asked our team to share what research means to them and how it shapes their work here at Healthwatch Essex in this blog: https://healthwatchessex.org.uk/2026/06/red4research-day-2026/

Join us next week on Thursday 25 June from 12pm–1pm for a lunchtime seminar with researcher Emediong Jumbo, a PhD student at King's College London.

Emediong will share insights from her doctoral research exploring the lived experiences of Black Disabled people with non-visible disabilities in the UK, focusing on anti-Black racism, ableism and embodied belonging.

This promises to be an insightful discussion drawing on co-production, interviews and focus group research.

Football should never be an excuse for abuse.

Evidence shows domestic abuse rises during major football tournaments, with incidents increasing by 38% when England lose and 26% when England play.

This isn’t just a statistic. It’s a reality for too many people.

If you’re worried about someone, or need support yourself, help is available.

We were also excited to share our vision for the future, including the next chapter for Healthwatch Essex as we embark on our rebrand journey.
