Yorkshire Vernacular Buildings Study Group

Yorkshire Vernacular Buildings Study Group Vernacular architecture is that which is typical for an area or a region. This may be seen in the building materials used, the layout, and the use of rooms.

A voluntary body which studies the vernacular buildings of Yorkshire in detail, and uses documentary and oral evidence from a variety of sources,to build up a picture of the different styles of local architecture. By the end of the nineteenth century improved transport and communications, and changing building techniques, led to less regional variation in new buildings. Yorkshire has a wide variet

y of vernacular buildings, from the yeoman-clothier houses of the West Riding, to the field barns of Swaledale and Wensleydale, and the brick farmsteads of the East Riding. By studying buildings in detail, and using documentary and oral evidence from a variety of sources, the Yorkshire Vernacular Buildings Study Group (formerly the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Vernacular Buildings Study Group) is building up a picture of the different styles of local architecture.

Talk "Bucklers' Yorkshire Buildings" on 17 September
Wakefield Civic Society meeting

There is an opportunity to hear Michael Rochford and Peter Brears, both members of our Society, talk about the background to their newly published book "Bucklers' Yorkshire Buildings: the Architectural and Topographical Drawings of John Buckler and John Chessell Buckler of 1804-1820" at the Wakefield Civic Society meeting on 17 November.

Between 1804 and 1820 the Bucklers made a remarkably comprehensive graphic record of hundreds of Yorkshire's finest and most interesting buildings, many now lost and forgotten. In this impressive book there are 34 plates in full colour and 181reproduced from the original pencil drawings, accompanied by explanatory text. The book includes many drawings of Wakefield including the Chantry Chapel.
