πŸ›‘ We Need to Talk About This πŸ›‘

A non-entry to Hunwick Community Social & Environmental Group's scarecrow competition depicted Black people in an inflatable boat β€” an image that evokes the tragic journeys of refugees and migrants, many of whom are fleeing war, poverty, and persecution.

This isn’t just a β€œbad idea” β€” it’s deeply offensive, racially insensitive, and dehumanizing. Whether intended or not, it draws on harmful stereotypes and turns real human suffering into a spectacle.

But here’s something we really need to consider: what message does this send to our children?
When young people see this displayed publicly β€” as part of a family-friendly event β€” they learn that mocking others' trauma, especially people who look different from them, is acceptable or even humorous.
That’s not the kind of lesson we should be teaching.

Even if the intention wasn’t malicious, the impact is real β€” especially for Black children and children of migrant families who may see themselves portrayed this way.

We all have a responsibility to call this out and do better β€” for the sake of empathy, for the sake of our values, and for the kind of community we want to raise the next generation in.

Let’s be better than this. Let’s make our village welcoming, respectful, and kind to everyone.

Hunwickian Historians:
John Pallister our Hunwick Historian has managed to collect over 50 images of the Village from early Postcards. While pulling together images for his presentation at the Church on 6th July, he identified some gaps in the coverage of some areas in the village. Looking at the postcards that he has, he is confident that the photographers will have covered all of these areas.
He would be grateful if you would check under the bed, in your attic and in your biscuit tins, to see if you have Post Cards (or any photos), of:
Β· HeselDene and Belle Vue Terrace
Β· Kates Close, including the Club, the Old Police Station and Institute/Coop
Β· Railway Terrace
Β· Helmington Terrace
Β· Hunwick Colliery (at Hunwick Station)

Thank You

He is particularly interested if anyone has any photos of the Hunwick Lodge Colliery Banner.

XMAS TREE LIGHT SWITCH ON 2024 πŸŽ„πŸŽ„πŸŽ„πŸŽ„

Following feedback from quite a few villagers that last year it was a bit rushed to try and attend both Village Xmas Tree switch on events on the same night and also attend the Church Xmas Fayre,
discussions have been held between The Joiners Arms Hunwick and Quarry Tea House to try and improve this so that as many villagers as possible can attend all 3 events, allowing everyone to attend and bring the whole Village together for a Xmas celebration weekend πŸŽ„πŸŽ„πŸŽ„πŸ˜ŠπŸ˜Š

Friday 29 November - Joiners Arms switch on
Saturday 30 November - St Pauls Xmas Fayre
