Saturday science 🧪
There is a cold blob reaching down to 1000 meters depth in the waters of the otherwise warming North Atlantic.
Scientist have re-analysed available data and formulated a new interpretation: the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Current (AMOC) is slowing and as a result, what we know as the Gulf Stream is transporting less warm water from the tropics to European shores.
Other scientists use modelling and come to different explanations: a complex interaction between the atmosphere and ocean surface.
Both scenarios have far-reaching consequences for our climate and ecosystems.
While we still don’t have a definitive answer, the question illustrates beautifully that in scientific research, the physics, maths, biology, computer and social science come together to advance our knowledge and understanding.
And on Pelican of London, we integrate ocean science into sail training to inspire young people to care about the ocean and get this message across:
If you want to go beyond the limit, become a scientist and challenge what we know.
