☀️ Back where they belong…in the skies! ☀️

Last Friday, marked a truly special day for 2296 (Dunoon) Squadron as cadets took to the air with No. 4 Air Experience Flying (AEF) at Glasgow Airport for the first time since September 2019. ✈️

After almost seven years, seeing our cadets back in the cockpit was nothing short of incredible. The smiles, excitement and memories made today are exactly what the RAF Air Cadets is all about. 💫

A huge thank you to the fantastic team at No. 4 AEF for making this long-awaited return possible. Here’s to many more flying opportunities for our cadets in the future!

What an achievement. What a day. What a moment for 2296 (Dunoon) Squadron. ✈️💙

Today, Cdt Evans and Cpl Brown attended a training session at 49F Sqn Greenock. This was a fantastic opportunity to visit another squadron, to begin building connections with cadets/staff from surrounding squadrons and to share knowledge supporting cadet learning opportunities.Thank you to Flt Lt Nicholls for organising, CI Ferguson/Cpl McKay for delivery of the training and also to Sqn Ldr Herd.

Cdt Evans successfully completed the theory section of his Blue Leadership badge (this is a great skill to have; beneficial within the school environment, the wider world of work and life in general).

Cpl Brown (having previously passed his Presentations Skills) completed theory for Method of Instruction training. As he progresses, this will enable Cpl Brown to teach classes at 2296 Sqn.

CI Brown was also in attendance, and having previously attended the Space 'Train the Trainer' training in Leuchars, shared her knowledge of the Space curriculum by training staff in delivery of the Blue Space syllabus.

We look forward to more opportunities like this in the future 🙂

Today, cadets from 2296 Dunoon Squadron attended Gourock Highland Games (alongside 49F Greenock Squadron) where they helped to promote the squadron and raise awareness of the Air Cadet organisation. For some, this was their first attendance at an Air Cadets event and all did really well, getting stuck in and inspiring potential recruits to join.

2296 Squadron are currently taking enquiries from prospective cadets. Our next intake will likely be around the start of August.

Since reopening, 2296 Squadron has received generous support from the following businesses and clubs within the local area:

Dunoon and District Clay Target Club
This fantastic club (which Cpl Brown regularly attends), kindly provided a monetary charity donation. This has allowed us to buy learning resources for the squadron.
The club has a wealth of experience between their members and are always welcoming to those showing an interest in the art of Clay Target Shooting.

Western Ferries
We would like to thank Western Ferries for their generous donation of ferry tickets, supporting cadets from 2296 Squadron with travel 'over the water' to events.

Thank you, your support is very much appreciated 🙂

This afternoon, our cadets took on the STEM challenge of designing and building a rollercoaster. Two teams used cardboard to create their tracks and then tested their builds using a marble (with varying levels of success!)

Crucially though, STEM learning is often about the process, and not necessarily the end result....this activity allowed our cadets to build valuable skills in problem solving, design, time keeping, critical thinking, negotiation, resilience and teamwork.

I think it's safe to say that a competitive spirit made an appearance and there were a lot of laughs in the process! Great effort everyone, that was a lot of fun 🙂

What a fantastic afternoon...our Junior cadets started to cover History of Flight and also completed a drill assessment. Cdt M Eche passed his allocated exams achieving the classification of Leading Cadet. Cdt C Eche reviewed the modules on offer from the Senior Cadet syllabus, and decided on a plan of action going forward. As part of his Master training, Cpl Brown passed his assessment for Military Aircraft. Well done everyone!
