This week’s features a beautiful image of St. Martin’s Church, taken from the High Street and Church Passage in 1922. Throughout the history of Dorking, St. Martin’s has gone through a series of transformations before becoming the Church we know today.

The existence of a church in Dorking was recorded before Domesday, and the medieval St. Martin’s was likely built in the 12th century. In 1837, the church was largely rebuilt, though this ‘intermediate’ church only lasted for 30 years before it was altered. Henry Woodyer (1816-96) designed the Victorian St. Martin’s Church, with building beginning in 1866. The 64 metre spire, a tribute to Bishop Samuel Wilberforce, was completed in 1877.
