Please see below the information regarding the upcoming indoor meeting on the Friday 18th September!

The meetings are held at 7.30pm at the Dorking Christian Centre.

This Annual General Meeting will be followed by Beyond the Aviary: The Value of Zoos in the 21st Century – Adam Douglass, Zoo Manager at Chessington World of Adventures

Following our brief AGM, Adam explores the role of modern zoos in conservation, education, scientific research and recreation, with a particular focus on birds.
The talk examines how zoos contribute to the protection of threatened species and asks what role they should play in tackling today’s biodiversity crisis.

There will be a refreshment break which provides an excellent opportunity to meet the speaker, catch up with fellow members and chat about recent sightings, walks and all things bird-related.

We hope to see you there!

From the A27 westbound take a small track on the left just before the roundabout for A2030 to Portsmouth.

There are 3 car parks but aim to park in the furthest if there is space.

Parking is free but there are no facilities.
There is a Holiday Inn on the roundabout and lots of suitable scrubland!

Car park is located at the top of Long Rise, where it meets Long Meadow, Findon Valley Worthing BN14 0HT

Turn left off the A24 Findon Road onto May Tree Avenue. Storrington Rise is the first on the left.

The car park is free with no facilities. These can be found further down the A24 on the Findon Road BN14 0AU, nearest toilets behind Findon Valley Library

Approx 45 minutes drive from Dorking.

Length of walk will be 2-3 miles with a few steepish inclines.

This is your reminder of our early morning half day walk around Birling Gap this coming Wednesday (26th August)

Start time: 7:30am, before the crowds arrive
Finish time: approximately 11:00 and 12:00
Distance 2-3 miles with some moderate inclines

Approximately 1:5 hours from Dorking and 56 miles away

Toilets at Birling Gap open between 9:30 and 18:00.
We will probably have moved away from the toilets by 9:30

Visitor Centre, shop and cafe will be open between 10:00 and 17:00.
Bring snacks, lunch and drinks, particularly if you intend to stay on afterwards. (We may end up at the cafe)

Birds we hope to see: Resident and migrating birds including Corn Bunting, Linnet, Stonechat, Whinchat, Wheatear, Wagtails, Hirundines, Warblers, Flycatchers, Black and Common Redstart, Raven and Raptors.

Upcoming walk to Rainham Marshes important information:

The weather is looking to be cooler and there is a risk of afternoon rain.

Meet time will now be at 9am!

Remember you will need to pay for the Dartford crossing, if you are coming through that way!

Sandwich terns and Cattle Egrets are the current highlights for this area and there are lots of seals on the Thames!

In case you missed our last post, here’s a reminder of the details for the up coming walk to Rainham Marshes on the 15th August!

New Tank Hill Road, Purfleet RM19 1SZ

After crossing the Queen Elizabeth Bridge (TOLL) exit the M225 onto A282. Leave at J31 onto A1306 for Thurrock. Stay on the A1306 for about 2 miles then follow the signs for RSPB Rainham Marshes on New Tank Hill Road.

Parking is free for RSPB members.

There are toilets but no longer a cafe.

Summer is a good time for spotting Marsh harriers, Peregrines, Hobbies, Kingfishers & Bearded t**s.
Unusual migrants often call by in Augus Butterflies and other insects are abundant.
If the tide is suitable, we will start with the walk along the Thames Path for waders & ducks, with finches & warblers in the scrub.
Then a flat 3 mile walk around the reserve.

There won’t be shade on this walk. However there are good sized hides with plenty of seating.
Toilets half way round & a large hide for lunch, or there are benches outside near the toilets.
