A refreshment break provides an excellent opportunity
to meet the speaker, catch up with fellow members and chat about recent sightings, walks and all things bird-related.

Acclaimed author and naturalist Connor Jameson delves into the fascinating world of Britain’s most elusive woodland raptor, exploring its history, ecology and remarkable return to our forests.

We look forward to award-winning author, conservationist and feature writer Conor Mark Jameson visiting us on Nov 20th when he will be telling us about the magnificent but rarely seen bird The Goshawk.

Conor worked for RSPB for 25 years and for Birdlife International in Cambridge before becoming a full time author.

His talk entitled ‘Looking for the Goshawk‘ is a fascinating tale and has been described by some groups as the best they have ever hosted so don’t miss what promises to be a really amazing evening.

The walk to Beddington Park that was originally on the 11th of November has now changed to the 12th of November!

Parking is free but ULEZ compliance / charge is necessary.

Toilets and cafe in the centre of the park.

This is a 58 Ha park, based around the River Wandle with a large lake and a stock pond as well as woods, wetlands and sacrificial crops grown for wild birds.

We will walk northwards through the park towards farmland for winter t**s, sparrows and finches and then over to the two hides overlooking the lake for waterfowl.

This is a reminder of our walk around Blue House Farm Nature Reserve (an Essex Wildlife Trust reserve) this coming Wednesday 28th October.

If you are intending to come, please can you let me know by Tuesday afternoon on 27th

Currently the weather is forecast to be dry, cloudy with sunny spells with a moderate breeze from the south west and temperatures ranging from 8 to 13 degrees C.

Start time; 9:30am.
Finish time; approx 3pm.

Meeting place - The Blue House Farm EWT car park.
Blue House Farm Chase. Chelmsford. CM3 6GU. What3words ///relaxing.hourglass.regulator.
This is 150m’s on the left before the farm itself.

Note there are only 8 parking spaces so it would be good to car share if possible, otherwise we may have to do some ferrying from the North Fambridge Recreation Ground.

Distance and time from Dorking - approximately 65 miles, which should take between 1hr 25 mins and 2hr 10mins at that time in the morning.

Dart charge payable.

There are no facilities at Blue House Farm so it is best to use toilets at the services en route.

Please bring lunch, snacks and drinks.

The walk will be approximately 2 miles mostly on flat paths.

Birds we hope to see include; wildfowl, waders, gulls, finches, winter thrushes and raptors……and maybe a rarity blown in by the recent storms.

Information for Sunday 8th November Isle of Sheppey

RSPB Capel Fleet raptor viewpoint, Harty Ferry Road, Sheerness ME12 4BG

Take the A249 onto the Isle of Sheppey, then A2500 east to Leysdown-on-Sea.
This becomes the B2231 Leysdown Road.
Turn right onto Harty Ferry Road, there is a brown RSPB sign at the turn-off.
Follow the road to the CP entrance on the left.

Free parking, no facilities.
Closest toilets will be at Leysdown Beach or The Ferry House at the end of Harty Ferry Road.

This is a great place to see a variety of birds of prey. Cold weather may even bring rough-legged buzzards from the east. Afterwards to Shellness beach where the midday high tide should bring waders closer into view.

Due to bad weather forecasted for tomorrow, unfortunately we have made the decision to cancel Saturdays walk to Titchfield Haven!

More information regarding the Saturday walk at Titchfield Haven Nature Reserve.

Meeting at 10.00am in the ‘Hove via Fareham’ car park by Hill Head Sailing Club, Cliff Rd, PO14 3JT.
There is also a little more parking off Cliff Rd round the bend opposite the far entrance of the nature reserve.

We will walk for a couple of hours or so on the reserve from the visitor centre entrance then return to the carpark for lunch.
We can then walk along the road a little to the far entrance of the reserve where we can spend up to another couple of hours or so.

Last year’s highlights were Glossy Ibis and then Penduline tit’s which weren’t very showy but were there all the same, much to my great excitement! Lots of other water birds should be on good show.

Hopefully the walk can go ahead but at the moment it is very much weather permitting.

Small carpark so car share where possible

A 660 acre livestock farm on the river Crouch owned & managed by Essex Wildlife Trust.
Winter wetlands attract large numbers of wildfowl & waders with over 2000 Brent geese.
The afternoon should bring short-eared owls.

2.5 mile circular flat walk on uneven grass paths with 3 hides.

Parking is available at the public car park past the reserve entrance by sea wall (what3words:///winter.laminated.oasis), or at Hove-To car park (what3words:/// appointed.sings.recount) which is just before the reserve.

There are public toilets at each site.

Parking costs £1.10 per hour.

Entrance fee for the reserve is £6.50.

The cafe is sadly closed so bring lunch but we will aim to return to the sea wall to eat.

A good place and time of year for bearded t**s.
Lots of winter waders and wildfowl incredibly close to the well-sited hides.

The next walk is round the Abingers on Wednesday 14th October at 10am.

This is a long, hilly walk, looking for a good variety of farm and woodland winter birds.

Meet at Abinger Roughs car park RH5 6QS.

Lunch will be at the Abinger Hatch pub, which will be pre-booked so because of this and the small size and popularity of the car park, please inform leader Marilyn if you are coming!
