Litter Free Dorset - Land, Coast & Sea

Litter Free Dorset - Land, Coast & Sea Campaign to reduce inland, coastal and marine litter in Dorset while improving and maintaining bathing water quality at source. Support us here!

With the bank holiday weekend upon us, hopefully we’ll all get a chance to spend some time enjoying nature and making the most of the incredible Dorset countryside!
With the warm and windy weather we’ve been having, risk of wildfire is high so to reduce fire risk, ditch the disposable BBQs and pack a picnic instead!
Just as tasty and perfect for a sunny day, so share a picnic with your pals and protect our precious heathland 👌🧺❤️

What an amazing turnout for Kimmeridge today!

14 amazing volunteers helped to remove a whopping 101kg of rubbish from Kimmeridge Bay 👏

Most of this consisted of hard plastics and fishing line which had previously been collected by K I M M E R I D G E S M I L I N G S E A S and we were glad to help transport it to her hut, where it will now be sorted for recycling ♻️

This weekend marks the final push of the Great Dorset Beach Clean, with five more cleans still to come. Come and join one of the final cleans of GDBC2026!

Have you spotted the new signs that have sprung up around Weymouth?👀

We've installed fresh, welcoming signage around the Marsh playing fields and Melcombe Regis Cemetery to gently remind visitors to act responsibly when it comes to litter, using public bins and picking up dog poo.

You'll also notice eye-catching signs along Custom House Quay and Trinity Road, alongside two new cigarette bins, in addition to those recently installed by our partner businesses 🚬

All of these locations were identified as litter hotspots through our Weymouth litter survey, community focus groups, and school workshops earlier in the year. We're trialling different styles and messages and will be monitoring how effective these interventions are over the trial period.

If you're enjoying the sunshine around Weymouth Harbour this week, look out for our new cigarette butt bins!🌞 We've teamed up with some fantastic businesses along Custom House Quay and Trinity Road to get these bins installed ahead of the busy season.

🚬 Outside The Anchor you'll find a ballot bin which encourages smokers to 'vote with their butts' rather than dropping them on the ground. The bin poses a question with two answer slots, creating a bit of friendly competition while helping to reduce cigarette litter around the harbour.

This work is part of our project, where we're trialling a range of approaches to tackle litter in hotspot areas across the town.

Find out more about the project here: https://www.litterfreedorset.co.uk/myweymouth/

Budmouth Academy Weymouth have launched a trial of our brand-new 'Battle of the Bottles' competition! 🎉

Students are going head-to-head to see which school house can recycle the most plastic bottles. This challenge is part of our project, where we're testing different ways to reduce litter across the town.

We're so impressed by the enthusiasm of the Budmouth Eco Club have been - not only have they filmed an assembly to spread the word across the school, they've also taken charge of weighing and emptying the bins each week.

Well done to Shelley house who topped the leaderboard in week 1 🌟

If the trial continues to be a success, we hope to roll out Battle of the Bottles to more schools across Dorset.

After the recent storms, Dorset’s beaches have seen a significant amount of marine litter washed ashore. Incredible volunteers have been out in force to clear the beaches, however rubbish is continuing to wash up.

If you would like to do your own beach clean, please reach out to us. We can loan you equipment and support any community clean ups. You can also check out our website to join other local groups!

Don’t forget this years Great Dorset Beach Clean will take place between 1 and 12 April. We have received lots of interest from groups and individuals who are eager to get involved. If you can organise a beach clean for this years event please email [email protected]
