Tonight, as always 24hrs a day 365 days per year.

Members of the UK Armed Forces, Uniformed Services, NHS, and Volunteer, Services, stand ready to answer the call to duty.

Often far from home, on this most special of nights.

The thoughts and gratitude of all the Cadets, Civilian Committee and Adult Staff, are with you, and we wish you a safe and speedy return to your loved ones.

Tonight, far north of the Arctic Circle,
A Royal Navy Submarine provides annual SAR Support during Takeoff and Landing, of Special Flight Callsign S4NT4-1.

The Royal Norwegian Air Force has already es**rted the Special Flight, through its Area of responsibility.

The Special flight has been picked up by the Radar Station at RAF Saxa Vord.

The Master Controller at RAF Boulmer, is watching the Special Flight closely, and has decided to deploy es**rt aircraft.

RAF Lossiemouth has Scrambled the Quick Reaction Alert (North)

RAF Brize Norton has Scrambled the Alert Tanker to Support.

No Doubt quiet calls have been made to RAF Akrotiri (Cyprus) and RAF Mountain Pleasant, to warn them of this most seasonal visitor.

Thank you all for your continued support of 2182 (Dorchester) Sqn ATC.

On Remembrance Sunday 2182 (Dorchester) Sqn paraded at the Dorchester War Memorial.

As always the cadets were exceptionally well prepared and very smart.

I’ve been OC (Officer Commanding) for 11 years, this year I wasn’t able to parade as normal, but I was there.

I had the privilege of hearing the community praising the cadets, for their professionalism and exceptional turnout.

One young person only got his uniform, the week before!

Well done.

Due to staff constraints, we don’t post very much anymore.

But, sometimes we just have to.

I’ve been privileged to meet some Second World War Veterans.

They have all been amazing, humble people.

From members of my own family, to the lady who lived down the road. Who as a WREN, was posted to Bletchley Park, and supported the effort to break the Enigma codes. (She could still destroy the Times Crossword at 97).

Sadly I never had the opportunity to meet many who I hold in especial esteem.

One of which was Flt lt John Cruickshank Victoria Cross (VC).

I recently learned that Flt lt John A Cruickshank VC, had passed away at 105.

By way of tribute I have copied his citation for his award of the Victoria Cross.

The King has been graciously pleased to confer the Victoria Cross on the undermentioned officer in recognition of most conspicuous bravery: —

Flying Officer John Alexander Cruickshank (126700), Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. No. 210 Squadron.

This officer was the captain and pilot of a Catalina flying boat which was recently engaged on an anti-submarine patrol over northern waters.

When a U-boat was sighted on the surface, Flying Officer Cruickshank at once turned to the attack.

In the face of fierce anti-aircraft fire he manoeuvred into position and ran in to release his depth charges.

Unfortunately they failed to drop.
Flying Officer Cruickshank knew that the failure of this attack had deprived him of the advantage of surprise and that his aircraft offered a good target to the enemy's determined and now heartened gunners.

Without hesitation, he climbed and turned to come in again.

The Catalina was met by intense and accurate fire and was repeatedly hit.

The navigator/bomb aimer was killed. The second pilot and two other members of the crew were injured.

Flying Officer Cruickshank was struck in seventy-two places, receiving two serious wounds in the lungs and ten penetrating wounds in the lower limbs.

His aircraft was badly damaged and filled with the fumes of exploding shells.

But he did not falter.

He pressed home his attack, and released the depth charges himself, straddling the submarine perfectly.

The U-boat was sunk.

He then collapsed and the second pilot took over the controls.

He recovered shortly afterwards and, though bleeding profusely, insisted on resuming command and retaining it until he was satisfied that the damaged aircraft was under control, that a course had been set for base and that all the necessary signals had been sent.

Only then would he consent to receive medical aid and have his wounds attended to.

He refused morphia in case it might prevent him from carrying on.

During the next five and a half hours of the return flight he several times lapsed into unconsciousness owing to loss of blood.

When he came to his first thought on each occasion was for the safety of his aircraft and crew.

The damaged aircraft eventually reached base but it was clear that an immediate landing would be a hazardous task for the wounded and less experienced second pilot.

Although able to breathe only with the greatest difficulty, Flying Officer Cruickshank insisted on being carried forward and propped up in the second pilot's seat.

For a full hour, in spite of his agony and ever-increasing weakness, he gave orders as necessary, refusing to allow the aircraft to be brought down until the conditions of light and sea made this possible without undue risk.

With his assistance the aircraft was safely landed on the water.

He then directed the taxying and beaching of the aircraft so that it could easily be salvaged.

When the medical officer went on board, Flying Officer Cruickshank collapsed and he had to be given a blood transfusion before he could be removed to hospital.

By pressing home the second attack in his gravely wounded condition and continuing his exertions on the return journey with his strength failing all the time, he seriously prejudiced his chance of survival even if the aircraft safely reached its base.

Throughout, he set an example of determination, fortitude and devotion to duty in keeping with the highest traditions of the Service.

Even 80 years after this action, he still travelled to the Shetland Islands every year to lay flowers at the grave of his navigator.

That, to my mind is a supreme example of leadership, humanity, courage, and friendship.

Blue skies and fair winds.

Per Ardua Ad Astra.

80 years ago tonight, 617 Sqn Royal Air Force, had begun final preparations for Operation Chastise. Aircraft were fuelled and armed, and the crews were briefed.

Starting at 2139hrs, the first brakes were released, and the first aircraft started their journey.

53 of the young men would never return.

3 would become POW's.

None will be forgotten.

Good Evening All!

I appreciate that our Blacked out Photo’s might be a little confusing. That was not the intention.

This has been done as our social media presence does not meet the new guidelines issued by Headquarters. ~ We Are Part of the Wider Royal Air Force Brand, and we must respect what this means, as this is only right and proper.

Until such time as we can meet the new guidelines, we’ll be going dark.

With such a small staff team it is difficult to justify staff bandwidth to Social Media.

Furthermore, Facebook especially has fallen out of favour with our target audience.

To this end we are evaluating our presence on the various Social Media Platforms.

Thank you all for following our page. We do appreciate your support.

We hope to reengage soon.

The US Navy have deployed a submarine to assist in rescue operations, if needed.

Royal Norwegian Air Force F-16s have already provided interception and es**rt during the early part of the flight.

The special flight has now received an initial in flight refuelling (IFR) of Specially formulated Carrot Juice from the standby tanker.

In this difficult and challenging year, all the cadets, Sqn Association and staff wish all of our followers friends, family and wider Royal Air Force Air Cadets a very Merry Christmas.
Finally, during this festive season, please spare a thought for all those who are striving to provide safety and security for us.

This year On Christmas Day, 10,000
members of the British armed forces - sailors, marines, soldiers and aviators - will be deployed around the world, serving on 33 operations in 28 countries.
