⚠️ Loan sharks are still operating — and people can feel trapped, isolated and scared to ask for help.

This recent story highlights the reality behind illegal lending and the impact it can have on people’s finances, wellbeing and confidence to seek support. Nobody should feel threatened or forced into borrowing money they cannot afford.

At Citizens Advice Doncaster Borough, we know this issue exists across Doncaster and we understand that people can find themselves in difficult situations for all sorts of reasons — rising costs, unexpected bills, reduced income or simply trying to get through a difficult period.

If you’re worried about debt, borrowing, money pressures or think you may have borrowed from an illegal lender — please reach out. Help is available and you do not have to deal with it alone.

We can support with:
✔️ Debt advice
✔️ Budgeting and income maximisation
✔️ Benefits support
✔️ Emergency support and wider referrals
✔️ Understanding your options without judgement

Really good to attend the Bank of England Citizens’ Panel in Doncaster tonight and share some of the realities we’re seeing locally through our work at Citizens Advice Doncaster Borough.

A lot of conversation around rising costs, people struggling despite being in work, debt, wellbeing and just how little financial resilience many households now have.

Important that local voices and frontline experiences are part of these national conversations.

🌟 Calling All Carers! 🌟

It's that time of year again where we invite you to help RDaSH measure how well they are supporting unpaid carers in our communities. If you care for someone receiving support from any of their services, we want to hear from you!

We’ve created a very short questionnaire for you to share your thoughts. If you would like to talk in more detail about your experiences, please contact us at [email protected] or call 01302 618507 and ask for Glyn.

We feel it's really important that we help our Health Trust to get it right and ensure we are supporting the review of what it feels like to be a carer. Your feedback is invaluable in making a difference!

We were incredibly proud to see our CEO, James Woods, attend the King’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace in recognition of the work taking place across Doncaster and the VCSE sector.

This recognition reflects the dedication of our amazing staff, volunteers and trustees at Citizens Advice Doncaster Borough, who work every day to support people through financial hardship, improve access to advice, and help deliver fairer outcomes for local communities.

We’re also grateful to Dan Fell for the nomination and for recognising the importance of community-led support and partnership working across Doncaster.

A proud and humbling moment for our organisation and the wider sector.

We’re pleased to share that our important work with the British Gas Energy Trust (BGET) will be continuing, allowing us to keep supporting households across Doncaster who are struggling with rising energy costs, debt, or wider financial pressures.

BGET is an independent charitable trust focused on reducing the impact of poverty, particularly fuel poverty, and supports people across England, Scotland and Wales regardless of their energy supplier. Through this partnership, Citizens Advice Doncaster Borough is able to provide specialist, practical support that helps residents stay warm, stay well, and stay financially secure.

What this ongoing partnership means for our community

Residents will continue to have access to:

- Free, specialist energy and money advice Including budgeting support, income maximisation, benefit checks, energy tariff reviews and help negotiating with suppliers.
- Support with applications for essential grants Such as BGET energy debt relief grants, emergency energy vouchers and help with essentials like white goods.
- Local, accessible 1‑to‑1 support Delivered through our community‑based services, ensuring people can get help in person, online or by phone.
- Guidance that helps prevent future crises Supporting households to understand their bills, improve energy efficiency, manage finances confidently and reduce the risk of falling into debt again.

Looking ahead
We’re excited to continue delivering this vital work for our community. Fuel poverty remains a significant challenge for many households, and our partnership with BGET ensures that people in Doncaster can keep accessing the right support at the right time.

Together, we’re helping residents take control of their energy use, reduce financial stress and build long‑term stability.

We’re delighted to share that our Advice on Prescription service will continue to operate across GP surgeries in Doncaster, ensuring residents can keep accessing specialist advice in a place they already know and trust.

Advice on Prescription is delivered by Citizens Advice Doncaster Borough and places trained, accredited advisers directly inside GP practices. This joined‑up approach recognises that many of the issues affecting people’s health, such as financial pressures, housing problems, employment challenges or difficulties accessing benefits, cannot be solved through clinical care alone.

By being based within GP surgeries, our advisers can offer early, practical support that helps prevent problems from escalating and reduces the stress that often impacts both mental and physical wellbeing.

What residents can expect

- Specialist advice on benefits, debt, housing, employment and energy
- Support from trained advisers who understand how life pressures affect health
- A confidential space within their GP practice
- Help that reduces stress and improves stability

We’re excited to continue delivering this essential service alongside our health partners, ensuring practical, life‑changing advice remains available right at the heart of our communities.

At the opening of the new Doncaster Housing for Young People (DHYP) office, Martha Capaldi was invited to speak, offering a powerful, first‑hand perspective on the long‑term impact of DHYP’s support.

Martha shared the experience of coming to the service as a young person during a period of crisis, and how the stability and guidance received helped to rebuild confidence and direction at a critical moment.

Now a supervisor within our organisation, Martha brings lived experience into the role, supporting young people with empathy, insight, and a deep understanding of the challenges they face. This journey is a compelling example of the difference that early, targeted intervention can make, not only in transforming individual lives, but in strengthening the wider community.

Martha’s story highlights the value of investing in services that create safe, supportive environments where young people can thrive. It is a reminder that the work we do together has a lasting, measurable impact on Doncaster’s future.

Digital access isn’t a luxury it’s essential.

That’s why our Device Bank helps people across Doncaster get the tech they need to learn, work and stay connected.

Our partnership with the brilliant team at PFG means we can reach people who might not otherwise access digital support. Recently, this joined‑up approach helped us provide a laptop to Marie, who’s studying to become an Autism Peer Support Worker while caring for her children.

Marie told us:
“The laptop has enabled me to study again after 18 years… it will improve my chances of employment and my self‑esteem.”

This is exactly what the Device Bank is all about — opening doors, boosting confidence, and supporting people to move forward.

Huge thank you to PFG for their ongoing collaboration. Together, we’re strengthening communities and helping people build brighter futures.
