A fascinating morning at the Armagh Robinson Library & No 5 with Tony Davidson and Evelyn Cardwell
Professor Ian McBride of University of Oxford delivered a thought-provoking lecture on Ulster, Ireland and America in 1776, exploring ideas and influences that would shape generations on both sides of the Atlantic. Particularly interesting was the discussion of Francis Hutcheson, who also features in Tony Davidson’s magnificent Meeting among the Spires

An excellent contribution to the USA NI 250 programme in a wonderful setting.

Just a few photographs from a very special recent visit to Donaghmore and the wider area by Canadian visitor W***y Prentice and his wife Punks , tracing family connections back to the Prentice and Lightbody families of the district.

With the help of local research and knowledge, including that of our own Sammy Wilson, W***y was able to stand in the footsteps of his ancestors and visit places connected with his family story for the first time. From Carland Presbyterian Church and local townlands to Donaghmore village and Dungannon, it proved to be a moving and memorable day for all involved.

This is exactly why local history matters; the connecting people across generations, communities and continents.

Many thanks to Lizzie Charley of Hidden Heritage NI ( http://www.hiddenheritageni.com ) for sharing the story and photographs with us, and for the wonderful care shown in bringing these family connections to life.

A privilege to attend the launch of Ulster American Treasures: The Migration Story at Belfast City Hall as part of the wider USA NI 250 programme 🇺🇸

A fascinating and important initiative exploring the historic links between Ulster and America, and the stories of migration, identity and community that continue to connect both sides of the Atlantic.

Donaghmore Historical Society also looks forward to launching our own USA NI 250 project, The Greer Project, at Hill of The O’Neill & Ranfurly House on 10th September at 7.30pm.
