The Scottish Centre for Children with Motor Impairments, also know as Craighalbert, provides learning, therapy and care for children and families across Scotland affected by motor impairments to achieve their potential and fulfil their ambitions. The Centre’s services include an independent school, nursery services, short term intensive residential programmes, an assessment service, group programm

es and individual child and family support. Fundraising is a very important part of the Centre’s income and all funds raised go directly to supporting the Centre’s work with children and families.

Across Craighalbert, switches are used in different ways to support our children and young people to learn, communicate, play and participate. They can help pupils make choices, activate toys, take part in games, create artwork, control equipment and engage more independently in activities.

What matters most is that the technology is adapted around the individual child. By finding the right access method, positioning and level of support, we can reduce barriers and create more opportunities for every pupil to take an active role in their learning.

Go Kids Go is running a free children’s wheelchair mobility training workshop in Glasgow on Wednesday 14th October.

The session will cover practical wheelchair skills including slopes, rough ground, back wheel balancing, road safety and emergency evacuation techniques, alongside activities such as wheelchair basketball and dance. Parents, carers and siblings can also get involved.

As we begin a new school year, our Pupil Council has held its first meeting.

Together, pupils agreed their meeting rules and shared what they enjoy about school, as well as ideas about what could be even better.

Our pupils’ voices matter. We support every child and young person to communicate their thoughts, make choices and contribute their ideas in ways that work for them.

We’re looking forward to seeing the ideas the Pupil Council develops this year and continuing to make sure our pupils are listened to and involved in shaping their school experience.

We were pleased to welcome Rachel Cackett, CEO of the Coalition of Care and Support Providers in Scotland (CCPS), to Craighalbert for a valuable discussion about how we can engage more actively with our CCPS membership.

The visit explored opportunities for Craighalbert to become more involved in CCPS groups, forums and networks, providing opportunities to connect, share learning and collaborate with other not for profit care and support providers across Scotland.

Importantly, greater involvement also gives Craighalbert opportunities to contribute our experience and expertise to wider discussions and help shape national policy and practice.

For us, this means helping to ensure that the experiences, needs and rights of children and young people with multiple and complex additional support needs, and the perspective of Scotland’s grant aided sector, are represented in conversations about the future of care and support.

We look forward to strengthening our involvement with CCPS, learning from others and contributing to the collective voice of the sector.

During a recent hydrotherapy session, Oak room used their PODD books to communicate which positions they wanted to swim in and which pool activities they wanted to take part in.

Having an onsite hydrotherapy pool gives our children and young people regular opportunities to build confidence, develop physical skills and make meaningful choices in a familiar and supportive environment.

Every opportunity to communicate matters, and every choice helps our pupils take an active role in their own learning and experiences.

Last week we were delighted to welcome Mark Griffin MSP for Central Scotland and Lothians West (Region) to Craighalbert.

During his visit, Mark spent time with our children and young people, families, staff and Board, learning more about our work and seeing first hand how we adapt learning and communication to enable every child to participate, engage and achieve their full potential.

He saw some of the fantastic artwork our pupils have been creating, learned more about the different communication methods we use, and heard about our ambition to showcase our children and young people’s creativity through an art exhibition.

Importantly, Mark also heard directly from families about their experiences of trying to access the right education and support for their child, and some of the barriers they continue to face within the current system.

It was also an important opportunity to share our ambitions for Craighalbert, including reaching more children and families across Scotland and continuing to develop the specialist learning, therapy and care we provide. We also discussed some of the challenges we face and ensuring that the value and impact of our unique approach is understood and supported.

There is still more to do to raise awareness, remove barriers and ensure every child has access to the education, support and opportunities they need to thrive. By working together, we can help make Scotland the best place for every child to grow up, learn and achieve.

Thank you to Mark for taking the time to visit, listen and engage so positively. We look forward to continuing the conversation and working together.

Our pupils have been exploring the work of famous artists through hands on, experiential learning, discovering the colours, materials and techniques that make each artist’s work distinctive.

As part of our topic on Artists, Rowan room have been learning about Vincent van Gogh and his famous Sunflowers painting. They explored real sunflowers alongside the artwork, comparing the colours and shapes they could see.

Using their PODD books, pupils identified and selected colours from the painting before making their own interpretations. Pupils chose a range of tools to create an abstract version of Sunflowers, including using their hands and feet to explore paint and make their mark.

And learning does not have to stay inside the classroom. One pupil took the activity outdoors, showing that every environment can be a classroom when learning is made accessible and meaningful.

At Craighalbert, we are ambitious for every child. By adapting how learning is experienced and removing barriers to participation, we create opportunities for pupils to make choices, communicate their ideas, explore creatively and achieve in ways that are meaningful to them.

We are delighted to welcome Damien to the Craighalbert team as our new Lead Teacher.

Damien brings extensive experience across mainstream and Additional Support Needs settings, alongside a strong commitment to inclusive education, children’s rights and helping every young person achieve their full potential.

Damien said:

“I’m delighted to be joining the Craighalbert team. Teaching has always been about making a genuine difference in children’s lives. I’m really looking forward to getting to know the children, families and staff, building strong relationships and playing my part in helping every young person achieve their full potential.”
