The school was erected in 1660 by the Reverend James Hyatt at his own cost, and was intended to be a “free school for the good education of the children of the parish”. This is thought to be the north wing which now houses the Old School Hall. A report of the charities of Croston Parish in 1826 records that the school was no longer sufficient for the village’s needs. It also notes that a “School o

f Industry” was established on the site in 1802 for the instruction of poor girls. This is thought to be the south wing which is now the home of Croston Pre-school

The School was rebuilt by public subscription in 1827. It is probable that at this time the south wing was joined to the north wing by the construction of the central block. The north wing was also thought to have been increased in height at this time

The building was home to the village infant school until March 1999, when it became vacant due to the construction of a new building on the site of the junior school. This provided a Grade II listed building and an opportunity for the community to come together to plan for it’s future. Following extensive consultation a registered charity was established to raise funds to develop the building into the excellent community facility you see now.

The Black Rabbit is opening its doors this weekend, and we couldn’t be happier to see this wonderful building come back to life!

Our brilliant volunteers at Croston Village Archive have been digging through the archives and found some lovely old photos of the building from its days as The Grapes Hotel.

We’re sending the very best wishes to The Black Rabbit for a fantastic opening and a bright, successful future ahead!
