Today is International Picnic Day! This is a great opportunity to enjoy a special time with your child outdoors, whether that be in the garden or your local park. Time outside is always fun way to learn together - look for environmental print around you such as signs, labels, shop names, and logos. Talking about letters, words, and print helps children build early reading skills. If you have an indoor picnic instead this also fantastic as you can find print around your home too, from empty yoghurt pots and cereal packets to leaflets through the door. Small moments like these will help your child's early literacy skills as well as enjoying a yummy meal! We have an article on our website with more information about environmental print, it is Halloween themed but the concept is exactly the same and can be applied to anytime of the year: https://www.tlc-essex.info/resource/a-halloween-journey/

Our Starting Reception Roadshows were a great success across Essex! These fun, friendly, and free events welcomed families whose children are starting Reception Class in September 2026, so a huge thank you to all the families who attended and took part. Sessions were held at several locations across the county, making it easier for families to join. They were full of helpful tips and advice from family and education services about independence, relationships, communication, staying active, and healthy routines - we hope this has helped families to support their children to feel ready for Reception Class. If you weren't able to attend any of these events , please don't worry, we have plenty of support available on our website! We hope you have enjoyed your week full of Summer themed activities! Today, create a nature treasure basket - collect Summer items such as leaves, flowers, shells and stones. Encourage your child to explore these items and describe them using senses - what can they see, smell, feel? This will help to develop descriptive language related to texture, size and colour. Your child can also categorise, compare and group items together. For more information and top tips on treasure baskets, visit this link from our website: https://www.tlc-essex.info/resource/tell-me-about-treasure-baskets/

Today's activity is water play with talk time! Use a bucket or tray, containers and jugs. Whilst your child is pouring and playing with the water, you can comment on their actions rather than asking them many questions; this will support the development of early language by focusing on action words such as 'pouring', 'splash' and 'fill'. Check out our website for more information on water play, along with our top ten talking tips: https://www.tlc-essex.info/resource/talk-listen-cuddle-top-ten-talking-tips/

Today, why not create your own beach scene? Use some sand and add some shells, figures and anything else you fancy - if you aren't able to get hold of any sand, you can use anything you like! Your role as an adult here is to model language and extend your child's ideas. By doing this simple activity you can develop narrative skills, imaginative skills and also extend sentences by linking key words together. For more information about interaction and communication, visit this link from our website: https://www.tlc-essex.info/resource/video-early-interaction-and-communication/
