Talk, Listen, Cuddle is an Essex County Council campaign helping parents, carers and families give their young children the best start in life, developing their language and communication skills through playful learning at home! The Aims of TLC:

- strengthen children's early language development by supporting all early years providers to improve the quality of language provision in their early years settings, encouraging the development of language rich environments.

- inform parents to better understand the best ways to support and develop their children's speech, language and communication.

- improve individual children's outcomes through the provision of guidance and resources to aid the observation and monitoring of children's language development, early assessments of needs and the provision of appropriate support.

Autumn Leaf Turn-taking: Collect a pile of colourful autumn leaves and take turns choosing one. Say “My turn” as you pick a leaf and drop it into a basket, then “Your turn” as the child chooses theirs. Add fun actions such as crunching, throwing or blowing the leaves. Keep the turns quick and model the words “my turn” and “your turn” to build early communication and social skills. Place a pumpkin where everyone can see it and explore it together. Roll it, tap it, stroke it and listen to the sounds it makes. Use exciting pauses and simple language: “Ready… roll!” “Tap, tap!” “It’s bumpy!” Follow what captures each child’s attention and give them time to communicate through looks, gestures, sounds or words. Autumn Adventure: Wrap up warm and head outside with your child for an autumn adventure! Collect colourful leaves together, encouraging your child to run, jump, stretch and reach as they explore. Good Beginnings

Good Beginnings is our long running information course for families of autistic children in reception and younger. Join us to learn more about autism, connect with other families of autistic children and young people and hear from professionals in education and health.
Taking place in: Maldon, Witham, Billericay, Brentwood, Colchester, Saffron Walden and Harlow in the spring and summer terms.

Autumn Listening Hunt: Wrap up warm and head outside for an Autumn Listening Hunt! Ask your child to listen carefully to the sounds around them. Can they hear leaves crunching, birds singing, the wind blowing or footsteps on the path? Take turns choosing a sound and describing it. Try questions such as: What can you hear? Is it loud or quiet? Where is the sound coming from? What do you think is making that sound? When you get home, see how many sounds your child can remember and tell you about. You could draw pictures of your favourites together. Why not join in too? Taking turns, listening and giving your child plenty of time to answer helps make talking feel like a game rather than a test.
