New Chelmsford Urban Business Grant Scheme now open!!

Creative businesses in Chelmsford can now apply for grants of up to £10,000 to help improve their spaces, equipment and day-to-day operations.

With rising costs and changing trading conditions, the fund is designed to help businesses grow, reduce costs and stay competitive.

Creative businesses could apply for things like:

🎨 New creative equipment or machinery – maybe you need a new kiln, 3D printer or specialist equipment for your studio

🎵 Sound, lighting or AV equipment for a creative studio or venue

🖥️ Computers, editing or digital equipment that helps you improve your creative production

🛠️ Improvements to studios, shops, cafés or workspaces

🪑 Creating a more welcoming customer space, including signage or displays

♻️ Energy-saving upgrades to reduce running costs of your studio or venue

📍 Accessibility improvements to make a venue or space easier to use

For example, an independent artist studio could apply to improve shared workshop facilities, a music venue could upgrade sound equipment, or a creative retailer could improve its shopfront and displays to attract more visitors.

The funding is for larger purchases or improvements that will last more than a year and help support Chelmsford’s local economy.

📅 Projects must be completed by: 28 February 2027

Birkett Hall Homes Commissioned Artist

We're delighted that Sara Hayes has been selected via open call to create a landscape-integrated public artwork in Woodham Ferrers, Chelmsford.

Sara is a public artist and creative producer whose work explores the relationship between people, place and landscape. Working through The Public Art Company, she creates site-responsive artworks that draw on local heritage, ecology and community identity, transforming everyday spaces into memorable landmarks and destinations.

The proposed land art, ‘Birkett Horse’, combines sculpture, interpretation, and landscape design to create a distinctive gateway feature rooted in the history and character of the area. Inspired by the long tradition of stables and working horses on the site, the work is designed to be experienced both from a distance and close-up, encouraging exploration and connection with the landscape.

Through careful integration with its setting, the project aims to create a landmark that is visually striking, locally meaningful and enduring, while remaining sensitive to the site's existing role as open green space.

Previous works include the Stanway Totem, a five-metre-tall wayfinding sculpture created as part of a wider public realm and wayfinding project for Stanway Community Centre, and the National Trust commission Northey Island ‘Jetty’, a large-scale installation exploring the impacts of sea-level rise on the Essex coast.

Through projects such as these, Sara combines sculpture, interpretation and storytelling to create engaging visitor experiences that encourage people to connect more deeply with the history, landscape and identity of a place.

Sara shares:

“I'm absolutely thrilled to be working with Birkett Homes and Culture Chelmsford on this project. Public art has an important role to play in creating developments that feel distinctive, welcoming and connected to their surroundings, and it's an arena I am really passionate about and wanted to become more involved in…”

We’re excited to share more details about Sara’s progress, including her work with local school children, soon!

Have you visited the new mural at Cheerful Chai in Broomfield yet?

It was great to see so many members of the local community get involved to learn new skills and help commissioned artist Scotty of Brave Arts to bring their shared ideas to life, as part of Concrete Canvas: Reimagined.

Scotty shares the following:

“Ultimately, the most fun part of my job is helping people try new and exciting things. Watching individuals challenge themselves with a spray can for the first time, build up their confidence, and create something beautiful together means that, in the end, the whole community wins.”

🤩 Thank you to everyone who contributed to this striking reflection of this vibrant local community.

Keep a look out for news about how you can get involved in celebrating its completion soon! 👀

What objects tell Chelmsford’s story today?

Spark! and the Museum of Chelmsford want to hear what objects tell your story of life in Chelmsford now, to help shape the museum's future collection.

Peter Blackman of South Woodham Ferrers Creatives and Community Hub, shares:

"My life in South Woodham Ferrers and the Chelmsford area is accompanied almost all the time and everywhere by a puppy ranging from 8 weeks old to around 13-15 months old who I Puppy Raise for Guide Dogs - so that after further training, that wonderful pup becomes a working Guide Dog, giving someone who is severely visually impaired the independence to go about their life."

📸 Jaggy arrives at Redbridge Training School for the next stage of training with Ellie.
