Why protecting orangutan habitat matters.

Rehabilitation is vital, but it cannot solve the problem of habitat loss. In many ways, it is dealing with the consequences after something has already gone wrong.

We recently shared our thoughts with The Star Malaysia on the complex pressures facing orangutans, why protecting healthy forests matters to people as well as wildlife and why long-term conservation depends on working together.

Once a species is lost, we do not get a second chance.

Malim now and then: Malim arrived at Sepilok in 2015 after being found severely injured. Thought to be around 12 years old, he was small, thin and in need of care.

After rehabilitation, he was released back into the reserve and was rarely seen for many years. Today, he is the dominant male - a very different Malim from the one who first arrived at Sepilok.

Enrichment feeders are placed high in the trees to encourage natural foraging behaviours. They help young orangutans practise searching for food, exploring the trees and solving small challenges as they grow more confident in the forest.
