🧲Magnatiles🧲

Some of our children have been busy with construction, and last week they used the magnetic tiles, along with our new magnetic ball and rods, to build. Working together with a bit of scaffolding at times, they made a giant ball run. They were all excited and proud of themselves once they got the enormous balls to run around their 'giant marble run'. It was super fun; well done!

The children learnt that magnets are surrounded by an invisible magnetic field. When two magnets are close, they exert a pushing or pulling force on one another. These forces are strongest at the ends of the magnets. The two ends of a magnet are called the north and south poles. Same poles repel: if you try to put two magnets with the same poles facing each other, they will repel. We say they repel each other.

Different poles attract
If you put two magnets together with their poles facing each other, they will attract. We say they attract each other.

🌊Water Play🌊

With Spring in the air, it’s the perfect time to get outside and explore. There’s nothing more fun than splashing and frolicking in the water!
Playing with water is not only fun; you may be surprised to learn that it offers many benefits for childhood development, making it one of the most popular activities in early childhood education. As the name suggests, water play involves water and tools such as buckets, containers, and toys that allow children to splash, scoop, pour, submerge, and explore their senses.
In pre-school, water play can involve a water table, a tuff tray, or a large container, where children can stand around and engage in their play. This creates an exciting, social experience for children as they splash, play, and have fun together.
We acknowledge the environment as a teacher. When children engage with their environment and use natural resources in their play, they build their understanding of the world and their place in it, while also developing their knowledge of their ability to influence things. Water play is both fun and educational, offering a range of benefits for children’s social and emotional development, as well as for developing their physical abilities and early literacy and numeracy skills. As an added bonus, children rarely get bored of it!

1. Water play develops hand-eye coordination
2. Water play introduces maths and scientific concepts
3. Water play enhances concentration and focus
4. Water play develops motor skills and sensory exploration
5. Water play builds social and communication skills
Children can see what happens when materials and ideas are shared through this kind of play.

🎨🖌️Painting🖌️🎨

Our children love painting, and we give them opportunities to do it both indoors and outdoors, on a table or on an easel.

Children gain numerous benefits from painting on an easel, including:
Fine motor skills: Painting requires precise movements with brushes and crayons, enhancing hand-eye coordination and control.
Creativity: The easel provides a canvas for self-expression and exploration of colour and design.
Social skills: Working with others at the easel fosters collaboration and communication.
Physical development: Painting engages the arms and shoulders, strengthening muscles and improving posture.
Imagination: The tactile experience of paint and the freedom to create without strict guidelines stimulate creativity and problem-solving.

💈💇Hairdressers💇💈

The children have been talking about the hairdressers; some have just had their hair cut. They asked if they could do our hair for us (disclaimer: no teacher’s hair was harmed during the recreation of the children’s experiences—well, not too badly!). So, with the children's help, we set up a hairdresser's shop in our role-play area. The children had lots of fun “washing, " styling each other’s hair, and putting on the wigs.

Hairdresser role play offers numerous benefits for young children, including improved fine motor skills, communication, social skills, and imagination. It helps children practice using tools, develop hand-eye coordination, and act out real-life scenarios, enhancing their understanding of the world and building confidence.

🧀🧀Cheese Straws🧀🧀

Some of the children talked about seeing fireworks at home; we talked about the different types of fireworks. Nicky spoke to the children about pinwheel fireworks, and they were fascinated. Nicky wanted to expand on their interest in fireworks, and after a discussion with the children, they made cheese Pinwheels together. The children washed their hands and prepared the cooking area. They grated some cheese, greased the baking tray, rolled out the puff pastry base, added the grated cheese, folded the pastry over, added more cheese, and folded the pastry again. They then carefully used knives to cut long strips, which they rolled and placed on the baking tray. Once they had finished cooking, they ate some of the twists as a snack and took the rest home. They smelled and tasted delicious!
