❗National Drowning Prevention Week

Sea Cadets take water safety seriously.

As part of our water safety training we help young people learn how to stay safe in and around the water.

🙌Here are some Top Tips to keep you safe around the water:

📌If you suddenly fall into cold water, try not to panic or swim hard straight away, especially if you’re not wearing a buoyancy aid.
💙Cold water shock can make you gasp and feel out of control for the first minute or two.
✅Instead, float on your back, keep your head tilted back with your ears in the water, and use your hands to help you stay afloat while you calm your breathing.
❗Once the shock has passed, call for help or swim to safety if you’re able to.

❗Remember: Float to Live – it could save your life.
Help keep your friends and family safe by sharing this message and talking about it together❗

💙 Thank You to Our Incredible Volunteers 💙

As Volunteer Week comes to a close, we want to take a moment to recognise and thank every volunteer across the Sea Cadets Physical Training Branch.

From unit training nights and local competitions to national courses, camps, field gun, fitness training, and events across the country — our volunteers give their time, energy, experience, and passion to help young people grow and succeed.

Behind every cadet achievement is a volunteer encouraging them to push further, believe in themselves, and achieve something they never thought possible.

This week, we’ve shared just a few of the stories from the amazing people who make our branch what it is. Stories of confidence, resilience, teamwork, friendship, and lasting impact. Every volunteer brings something unique, but all share the same commitment to supporting and developing young people.

To every instructor, unit volunteer, course directing staff member, supporter, and mentor — thank you.

Thank you for the evenings, weekends, long days, early mornings, encouragement, patience, humour, and dedication you give so freely.

The impact you make on young people lasts far beyond the parade ground, sports hall, or training area.

You are the heart of the Sea Cadets Physical Training Branch. 👏

💙 Volunteer Week Spotlight 💙

Meet PO (SCC) Tom Deeley, Area Staff Officer (Physical Training) – South West Area.

❓ Why did you choose to become a volunteer?
“I became a volunteer after 6 years as a cadet. I stayed because of the impact I made on young people. Having them tell me they wouldn’t be who they are without me was life-changing for both of us.”

❓ What do you enjoy most about being a volunteer?
“Meeting new people on the many, many courses we run. Even if it seems like a routine course, there’s always someone new and interesting to talk to.”

❓ What’s the most rewarding part of your role?
“The most rewarding part of my role as A*O is seeing cadets succeed. As cliché as it sounds, every time I see a young person or adult achieve something they didn’t believe possible — whether that’s a fitness assessment, qualification, or competition — it’s incredibly rewarding.”

❓ Can you share one volunteer moment that stayed with you?
“One of my young people once told me that without PT, they would probably have left the Corps and been in a much worse place personally. As heartbreaking as that thought is, knowing the impact we as a branch made will always stay with me and keep me going.”

❓ What has volunteering taught you?
“Volunteering has taught me more skills and qualities than I can possibly list. It’s improved my instructional style, my ability to communicate with young people from across the country, and taught me a lot about the world… and to be careful when passing through gates.”

❓ What would you say to someone thinking about volunteering?
“Don’t think about it — just do it. It’s one of the most rewarding things a person can do with their time.”

Every volunteer has a story, and every story shows the lasting impact volunteers have on young people across Sea Cadets.

Thank you to all of our incredible volunteers this Volunteer Week. 👏
