Do you think you have what it takes to leave the rest of the boats in your wake and be crowned the best overall team? Does your crew have the best fancy dress?

This is your last chance to find out, as there are only five team spaces left at Sue Ryder Bedford Dragon Boat Race!! Registrations close at midday on Monday, 15th June.

Take to the water on Saturday, 18th July, along a 200-metre River Ouse racecourse, with thousands of spectators roaring your team to the finish line.

Kindly sponsored by Champneys Resorts, at Bedford River Festival, in association with Bedford Borough Council and NewWave Events.

"I will always help when I can. The hospice gave my mum dignity and peace at the end of her life. If I can give even a little bit back, that is enough for me."

Meet our amazing volunteer Pippa, who is celebrating an incredible milestone this Volunteers’ Week, marking 20 years of volunteering!

75-year-old Pippa first began volunteering after her mum received care at the hospice in 2004. Over two decades, Pippa has supported us in so many ways, from helping in the fundraising office in the early days to supporting community events to offering a friendly face to patients and families.

"I have always liked being useful," she says. "Sometimes it was something small, a lift, a chat, a cup of tea, but it mattered to the person you were helping."

One of her most powerful memories is taking part in our first Starlight Hike with her sisters, shortly after her mum died, calling it "incredibly uplifting."

Pippa says she remembers meeting patients and families whose stories have stayed with her, including a young mum she met while helping with refreshments on the ward.

"She was ordering her little boy’s school uniform on her laptop," says Pippa. "She knew she would not be there when he started school, but she wanted to make sure he had everything he needed. Moments like that stay with you."

Thank you so much for all you do, Pippa – your hard work and compassion really do mean so much 💙

This week is Volunteers’ Week - an annual UK-wide campaign held from the first Monday in June to celebrate and recognise the contributions of volunteers.

We want to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to all of our incredible volunteers 💙

Our volunteers work across our shops and healthcare centres in a range of roles. Without their dedication and support, we wouldn’t be able to provide our expert care. So again, thank you, volunteers- we literally couldn’t do this without you!

The John O’Gaunt Golf Club continues to drive donations as they gear up for their next charity fundraiser in support of Sue Ryder St John’s Hospice, The Garden House Hospice, and the Pauline Aubigne Community Fund 🏌️‍♂️

On Sunday, 21st June, the club will host a special golf marathon starting at 6:30am, where captains David Barlow, Paul Fletcher, Jean Cobb, and William Gilbert will take on a challenging 54-hole feat to raise much-needed sponsorship and donations.

Members can tee off on the same day as the Midsummer Madness competition, beginning at 5.00am, creating a lively atmosphere around the course throughout the day.

The club’s charity champion, Lorna, said: “For many years, each of the club’s four sections supported its own chosen charity. In 2024, the club decided that all sections would unite behind a single fundraising effort to ensure an even bigger impact. The captains were unanimous in wanting to support our chosen charities in memory of several long-serving members”

The fun and support continues, with the Captains’ Charity Day in September promising competitions and a gala auction! To get involved with any of their upcoming events, contact Lorna at [email protected].
