Cyrenians OPAL - Opportunities for Active Lives

Cyrenians OPAL - Opportunities for Active Lives Our service is funded through a collaboration with West Lothian Council, West Lothian Health and Social Care Partnership, and NHS Lothian. Who do we work with?

Cyrenians OPAL works with people aged 60 and over promoting active and fulfilling lives, creating and enriching communities which empower all to remain independent, living at home and socially connected. Cyrenians OPAL works with people aged 60 and above, promoting active and fulfilling lives, creating and enriching communities which empower all to remain independent, living at home and socially c

onnected. The service is delivered by a team of dedicated, trained volunteers who offer encouragement, companionship and support to help people engage in social, leisure and community activities. We support people aged 60 and above who live in West Lothian

Community Groups

OPAL supports over 20 community groups throughout West Lothian open to anyone aged 60 and above. These groups are designed to bring people together, foster friendships, have fun and to get people involved in their local community. It is known that social connections are essential for health and well-being at all ages and may be especially important for promoting health in later life. Types of groups:
• Social groups
• Singing group
• Activity groups
• Walking groups
• Men’s group
• Lunch/Dinner groups

Participants enjoy a variety of experiences including: gentle exercise, quizzes, games, live music from entertainers, speakers, walks and opportunities to learn new skills. Groups foster a sense of belonging, strengthen social connections, and empower individuals to actively engage and contribute to their community. One-to-One Support

The One-to-One service is accessed via a referral by a health professional, or individuals can self-refer. It is a time-limited, confidence-building service where clients are matched with a volunteer for a period of typically 6 – 9 months. To ensure the best support, we match clients with like-minded volunteers who share common interests. The service supports clients in progressing towards a specific personal goal through:

• Short outings in the local community
• Confidence-building walks
• Support to attend local community groups
• Friendly chats on the phone

One-to-One support allows individuals to build their confidence, link into their local community, learn new or develop existing skills and improve wellbeing. Digital Matters

Digital skills, whether on a tablet, smartphone or PC, are becoming increasingly important in everyday life. We provide tailored support and tuition to build confidence and ability in using digital devices, either a group setting or on a one-to-one basis

OPAL Community Hub

Our Community Hub is centrally located in Bathgate precinct and welcomes service users and volunteers as a drop-in for a cuppa and chat, for a range of groups and events and for training activities. The Hub also holds our resource library which has a variety of games and activities available for loan. OPAL Volunteers

The OPAL service is provided by a dedicated team of volunteers, who are essential to ensure we deliver our services successfully. Volunteers take on various roles, including leading or assisting groups, befriending and driving. Volunteers undergo a Disclosure Scotland PVG check where this is required, are supervised by an OPAL Coordinator and receive a full programme of training including specialist skills such as Falls Awareness, Sighted Guidance, Mental Health First Aid, Dementia Awareness and Trauma Informed Practice. The OPAL office is open Monday-Thursday 9:00am-5:00pm. Friday the office is closed but staff can be contacted on 01506 815 815 from 9:00-4:30pm.

💙 Supporting People to Find the Right Help 💙

There are occasions when we receive requests that are outwith the scope of our Opal Service. When this happens, we always do our very best to connect people with alternative local services that are better suited to their individual needs. 🌟

Recently, we were in contact with a gentleman who had been struggling to manage his weekly shopping independently and was looking for some additional support.

By signposting him to a service more suited to his needs, he is now feeling more confident, independent, and able to get out and about in his local community. 🙌
Here’s what he had to say:

💬 “I didn’t know these things existed. They are going to accompany me to the shops, help me with my shopping and then take me home again. They seemed to understand me. You have no idea how much of a difference this will make to me. I feel great and a lot of pressure has been taken from me.”

We are so pleased we could help him access the right support and make a positive difference to his daily life. 💫

Over the past year, we've been fortunate to welcome three fantastic student volunteers to OPAL: Lucy, Bea and Ewan.

Each of them has brought their own skills, enthusiasm and fresh ideas to the service, making a real difference to our clients, volunteers and staff team. From supporting activities and events to developing and delivering new opportunities for our members, their contribution has been invaluable.

As their placements come to an end, we'd like to thank them for all their hard work and wish them every success in the future.

Here are a few words from Ewan about his experience volunteering with OPAL:

My time as a student volunteer at Cyrenians OPAL has been a valuable and educational experience for me. As somebody who was used to working with young people, working with the older generation was a unique and interesting experience, as I had to adapt to the challenges they face and adjust my practice accordingly.

Planning activities according to their ability was something I had to consider, as well as adapting to the different relationship dynamic between the service users and I. The staff team at OPAL have been very supportive and made fitting in and learning how to navigate this new environment very easy.

Since beginning this placement for my university course, I have learned how to set up and manage charity events, record different types of data, and facilitate empowerment and development in older people. It has been a pleasure to work with this organisation and I would do it again if I had the opportunity to.
