Brilliant News about the Alford Friendship Cafe .......... and congratulations to all involved!

Hello everyone,
You will be delighted to know our Friendship Cafe has been nominated and shortlisted for an Award, by the Warm Welcome Campaign - a national (GB) organisation of which we have been a member for four years.
There are well over 6000 ‘warm spaces’ up and down the country, and this is the first year their work (including ours) is being celebrated by giving awards in 6 categories.
Our Cafe is one of 4 shortlisted for the WARMEST WELCOME AWARD, out of hundreds of nominations. We are the only Scottish group to be so honoured, and we should all be immensely proud of our joint achievement, and of each individual’s contribution to making a positive difference to life here in Alford.
Well done everyone . High fives all round !
The Awards ceremony will take place on 17th June at SKY Headquarters in London , where those shortlisted will receive a certificate. The winner in each category is presented with a trophy (just like the Oscars) and £1000 towards their Warm Welcome Space.
Our Cafe will be sending representatives to the Ceremony, where each project’s story will be told and celebrated. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if our little corner of the country were successful ? (More news in due course.)
If you are interested in reading all about it , Google WARM WELCOME and follow the prompts to AWARDS SHORTLISTS, where you will find our name listed.
With grateful thanks for all your help,

A reminder of the coffee morning at Alford West Gordon Church on Saturday 16 May from 10am to noon.
Come and join us, have a cuppa and fine piece, a good chat and then visit our room where you can have your blood pressure checked.
High blood pressure (also called hypertension) can lead to serious problems, but the only way to find out if you have high blood pressure is to get your blood pressure checked.
We look forward to seeing you there.

AULD LANG SYNE AT THE FRIENDSHIP CAFE !
St. Andrew’s Church hosted the final Cafe of the season on Wednesday. An Easter- themed lunch was enjoyed by 50+ guests and volunteers, and the event finished with a ‘singalong’ selection of favourite Scottish songs.
A hearty vote of thanks is due to everyone who has supported this great community venture - inc. St. Andrew’s Church, Alford and District Rotary Club, Alford Academy, Alford Co-operative, West Gordon Church, and all the willing volunteers - soup-makers, bakers , Wednesday helpers, drivers, shoppers, entertainers, funding donators , organisers and multi-taskers - but most of all the wonderful Alford people who have attended, enjoyed the food, and shared their laughter and their fund of stories for everyone’s enjoyment .

FRIENDSHIP CAFE

A wonderful event was enjoyed by 40 guests at today’s Cafe. In celebration of Robert Burns, a meal of all-Scottish fare was served.

Pipers and drummers from Alford Academy entertained everyone with a rousing selection of their music. A local flautist also played a selection of Burns’ songs whilst the guests enjoyed their meals.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to a splendid Alford Community occasion.

We hope you are all keeping safe and well during this snowy spell - and to say a huge THANK YOU to all who supported our 2025 Santa Sleigh collection.
The amazing sum of £2,156.19 was raised.
Again, your generous donations allow us to support a range of local events throughout the year, including our well attended annual “Over 60s” afternoon entertainment.
We heartily say a big “thank you” to all who willingly contributed to “Santa”.

29th Charter evening

During our celebration 29th Charter evening and Christmas meal last night, members and guests heard from John and Varrie Mayhew, representing the Scottish Charity Air Ambulance (SCAA) service, who gave an illustrated talk on the SCAA history and outlined a selection of activities and rescues in which the helicopter ambulance had successfully participated.

Some moving stories around difficult but successful rescues were recounted by John, proving just how valuable the unit based in Aberdeen has been. With the unit being available to attend incidents all year round, John also outlined the staggering annual costs attached to running the resource, both in terms of manhours and money.

Following an extremely informative presentation, President Richard was delighted to present John and Varrie with a cheque for £1,400, this being the proceeds of the Club's annual Duck Race that took place in September.

In concluding, John and Varrie indicated the donation would help ensure SCAA's goal - to get urgent medical assistance to every patient, when it is needed – wherever they are in Scotland.

"Over 60s" Afternoon Tea

A wonderful afternoon of great fun, good chat, tasty food and superb entertainment was had yesterday afternoon during the annual Alford and District Rotary Club's "Over 60s" afternoon tea, held within the Haughton Arms Hotel, Alford.

Joined by 100 guests, the Rotarians saw the Hotel provide a superb spread of sandwiches, savouries and cakes, tea and coffee with Christmas pies and shortbread, all of which was enjoyed by everyone.

Following this, our Rotarian guests were entertained by Jack McPherson, a one man show who played and sang a wide selection of "easy to listen to" and "sing along" tunes.

The afternoon culminated in a raffle, that saw a variety and great number of valuable prizes won by those attending, and who had the lucky numbers drawn.

All in all, a fantastic and very successful afternoon was experienced, with guests remarking they very much were looking forward to next year's event.

Our thanks go to all who helped make this event a successful occasion.

Remember to watch out from tomorrow... That's when it all starts!
