Abundance York

Abundance York Abundance organises volunteers to harvest unpicked fruit across York. Volunteers pick, deliver and run events like juicing. Join us - send a message!

(A project from Edible York ) We’ll be keeping fruit trees across the City healthy, looking after unloved fruit trees, and helping people enjoy the fruit trees in their gardens. At harvest we'll collect the free, fresh fruit and spread it across York. We’ll be planting, cycling, picking, pickling, juicing, sharing, chutneying, and most of all, eating. But we need YOU to help us do it!

Did you know that there is a 10 year old orchard in the centre of York?
Just outside the walls in Fishergate is the old York Cemetery, and in 2016 they planted a Heritage orchard with lots of interesting local varieties.
(There are more fruit and nut trees in the wider cemetery areas too).
Definitely worth a walk in this lovely nature-filled space, with lots of birdsong and butterflies, it is a lovely spot to unwind.
Check it out - the friends group Cemetery do a great job

🍏🍎🍐
Would you like to be part of Abundance in 2026? It’s York’s brilliant urban harvesting programme. Each year we pick tens of thousands of apples, pears, plums and more from local trees, so they can be out to good use instead of going to waste. We’re looking for:
🤝 - Groups who might want to pick or use fruit
🌳 - Access to even more fruit trees
🪜- Volunteer pickers
🚙 - Volunteers to help deliver fruit
Please spread the word - and if you’re interested, send us a message here or email [email protected]

If you want ladybirds, build a garden they want to live in.
Don't spray pesticides, even the “organic” ones, because you can’t invite predators over while poisoning the buffet. Plant pollen and nectar sources like dill, fennel, yarrow, alyssum, calendula, and native flowers. Let a few aphids exist without declaring war on your entire ecosystem.
Ladybirds don’t move into empty neighborhoods. They go where the food is. Leave a little mess too. Dry stems, leaf litter, and perennial plantings give beneficial insects places to shelter and overwinter. A perfect, sterile garden might look neat to humans, but to wildlife it looks like a car park.

The goal is to rebuild enough balance that nature comes back on its own. That’s the difference between gardening, and stewardship. And around here one thing is certain, we all grow better together.

Definitely apple blossom time!
(And pears but most are nearly over now).
Head out this weekend or next and soak up the scent, buzz, and birdsong at one of the orchards in York!
(This visit was around the The Dormouse Pub and adjacent fields area yesterday evening).

🌸Glorious early blossom this week is most likely to be early cherry plums.
Have you seen one?
Most often white in hedgerows and wild areas, but there are a few pink flowered ones around too.
Let us know where the best ones you have seen are!
