Research opportunity: The hidden work of everyday life

Parent Carer Forum York has been asked to share this research opportunity from the University of Manchester.

The research explores the often unseen work involved in keeping everyday life running, including planning, organising, remembering and coordinating. This may be particularly familiar to parent carers of children with SEND, who often manage appointments, services, paperwork and communication alongside many other responsibilities.

We were delighted to welcome Ryan Swain to New Earswick Folk Hall this morning to share his talk, You, Me and ADHD, with members of Parent Carer Forum York.

The session provided an opportunity to explore ADHD, develop understanding and reflect on the experiences of neurodivergent children and young people and their families.

A big thank you to Ryan for sharing his knowledge, insights and experiences with us. We hope everyone who attended found the talk useful, informative and supportive, and came away with something valuable to reflect on.

📢 Preparation for adulthood appointments available tomorrow

Bookable appointments are available at SEND Central to support young people and parent carers with planning for adulthood.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Who is it for?
Young people, parents and carers who are thinking about the transition to adulthood, including education after school or college, employment and training, independence, health and social care.

Are you a parent/carer of a young person in Year 9 or above with SEND?

Come along to find out about post-16 education, employment, training and support available as young people prepare for adulthood.

📍 Conference Hall, Askham Bryan College

There will be local education providers, employers and support organisations available to answer your questions, plus information about benefits and financial support and Supported Internships.

There will also be an opportunity to try agriculture and animal-related activities using Virtual Reality. 🐴🌱

Could your young person help shape SEND services in York?

The York SEND Youth Forum is a group for children and young people aged 7 to 25 who have SEND or additional needs.

You don't need a diagnosis or an EHCP to get involved. The forum is open to young people who live or are educated in York.

The Youth Forum gives young people a real opportunity to have their voices heard. They can:
✨ Share their views and experiences
📣 Get involved in campaigns and projects
📝 Complete surveys and questionnaires
💡 Share ideas about how services could be improved
🤝 Speak directly with leaders across Education, Health and Care
🌟 Help shape SEND services for young people across the city

📅 How to get involved:

In-person meetings:
🕟 4.30 to 5.30pm, fortnightly on Wednesdays

Online meetings:
💻 6 to 7pm, monthly, usually the last Thursday of the month

✨ The next meeting takes place at SEND Central this Wednesday, 7th October, from 4:30pm to 5:30pm. ✨

And if attending meetings isn't possible, that's absolutely fine. Young people can still join the mailing list and take part in questionnaires and surveys, or simply share their views and ideas directly.

They offer free, impartial advice and information and can help you navigate local services, understand what support is available and point you in the right direction.
