Yesterday’s Humber Business Week kick‑off absolutely flipped the script. Young people weren’t just in the room; they were leading it.

Amelia and Luke from Healing Academy opened the event by interviewing ABP’s Andrew Dawes, who shared his vision of the Humber as “the economic engine room of the UK.” Their message back to the region was even stronger: give young people real chances, real experience, and we’ll amplify your voice.

Kaz Walker lit up the room with her journey from poverty in South Yorkshire to 86 England caps and captaining the national team, now inspiring young people through Tigers Trust. We also heard from Ian Sharp, proudly championing Scunthorpe; Katy Robinson, a force for women in construction; and Caine Wild, who had everyone laughing as he shared how he returned to the school he was once expelled from, this time to help students thrive.

The Humber’s ambition, creativity, and potential were on full display.

Huge thanks to Team Future Humber for an inspiring start to the week.

The Wave Project is a charity whose purpose is to change young lives through Surf Therapy. To date, more than 19,000 young people have taken part in the programme, learning to surf, building confidence and being supported throughout by trained mentors.

The six‑week Surf Therapy programme gives young people a structured, calm space to try something new at their own pace. The focus is on small steps, steady encouragement and helping them feel more capable in and out of the water.

After completing the course, young people are welcome to join Surf Club, where they can keep practising, stay connected and remain part of a supportive community. Some later choose to volunteer, helping the next group of young people feel at home in the water too.

Strong, resilient community organisations don’t just happen; they’re built through steady work, lots of graft and commitment. That’s why we continue to back organisational development, this is the essential work that keeps grassroots groups stable, confident and ready to support local people.

This year, our Organisational Development Fund has once again helped organisations strengthen their foundations so they can plan, adapt and thrive. In 2025/26, we have awarded £76,586 to 27 community organisations across the region. It’s a reminder that when the basics are strong, the impact on communities is even stronger.

🌿 What could the next five years mean for communities across North and East Yorkshire?

Today, we’re launching Two Ridings’ new 5-year plan - a hopeful, community-led roadmap shaped by the people who know their communities best.

Across our region, people are stepping up every day: running food hubs and warm spaces, helping families stay afloat, creating opportunities to learn new skills, and bringing communities together. But this work only happens when people choose to give, and when local organisations have the support and resources they need to act.

Our new plan sets out how, over the next five years, we will grow giving, back grassroots organisations across North & East Yorkshire, and strengthen the communities that make this region thrive. Rooted in local voices and shaped by what community groups are telling us they need most, it’s a plan for how we can create lasting change together.

Because communities flourish when people come together — and that’s what Two Ridings is all about.

Behind every community organisation, every project and every idea, there is always a story.

On Monday alongside High Sheriff Neil Sanderson and Two Ridings Trustee, Katherine Blaker, we had the chance to hear three of them, spending time with brilliant groups in Hull who opened their doors and shared the heart of what they do. It was one of those mornings that quietly reminds you why this work matters.

Our first stop was Giroscope Hull, a long‑standing West Hull organisation that creates affordable homes, enterprise spaces and practical opportunities for people facing barriers. At Kitchen 23, young people gain hands‑on experience in a professional kitchen, building confidence, skills and real‑world catering experience through events at the St Matthew’s Community Enterprise Centre.

We then visited Solidarity Hull CIC, run by and for people from around the world who call Hull home. Their Food Justice project reduces loneliness and supports families through nutritious food, cooking confidence and a warm, welcoming space where people can connect and feel part of the community.

Our final visit was to aScEND Hull, who support children, young people, adults and families living with SEND. Now settled into their new home, they recently opened the Brewable Café, an inclusive space offering affordable meals, volunteering opportunities and a safe environment to build skills and confidence.

Three organisations, each strengthening community in their own way.

It was a privilege to showcase their efforts to the High Sheriff, whose role helps shine a light on such essential initiatives. Feeling very grateful to have been part of it, and, as always, inspired by the difference people are making.
