Celebrating Our Frontline Heroes: The Nalawa Branch Fun Day! 👏

Real change starts at the grassroots level, driven by the people who know their communities best. Recently, the Nalawa Branch took the wonderful initiative to host a special Community-Based Surveillance (CBS) Fun Day. This event was entirely dedicated to celebrating, encouraging, and recognizing the hard work of 26 passionate CBS Volunteers and Community Health Workers from the District of Nalawa, Saivou, and Nakorotubu.

To make the day even more impactful, team leaders from Nadi and Rakiraki traveled to join the event, alongside branch executives and volunteers. Their presence helped strengthen regional teamwork, share valuable field support, and build deeper connections. The Fun Day gave these frontline heroes a well-deserved opportunity to refresh their knowledge, share experiences, and bond closely as a team.

The ultimate goal of this mission is true community empowerment. Armed with the right skills and resources, these health heroes inspire positive behavior changes, promote sustainable habits, and encourage early response to prevent epidemic diseases before they start. We are incredibly proud of the Nalawa Branch's initiative to uplift their team, and we thank all of our volunteers for their endless dedication to creating a healthier, safer Fiji!

Natawa Youth and Leaders Unite for Four-Day Y-Adapt Disaster Preparedness Training!

True climate resilience requires every generation at the table. From August 17th to 20th, 2026, thirty community members in the interior of Ba province gathered daily for the Natawa community’s Y-Adapt training workshop.

This vital initiative intentionally engages active youth participants alongside the experienced members of the Community Disaster Risk Management Committee (CDRMC). This collaborative approach ensures that youth perspectives are directly integrated into local disaster planning and grassroots resilience efforts.

The core focus of these sessions was to raise awareness about critical climate risks—with a heavy emphasis on flood risk management—and to support participants in mapping local vulnerabilities. Through interactive, participatory activities, the youth were guided to develop practical, innovative ideas for strengthening local resilience. At the same time, CDRMC members provided essential mentorship to ensure these new youth-led ideas align seamlessly with established community disaster management structures.

An active youth participant Epeli Seavula, who noted that the Y-Adapt training is highly effective in helping youth identify potential hazards during community cleanups, successfully preventing accidents before they can happen.

By bridging the generational gap, this training strengthens local ownership of climate resilience actions and supercharges the effectiveness of local disaster preparedness strategies across Fiji.

Meet some of the people who keep Fiji Red Cross Society running.

They're not in the field when the cyclone hits. They're in this room, going through financial reports, reviewing risk registers, asking why a programme is behind schedule. Some have full time jobs elsewhere and give up their evenings for this.

Some are retired and could be doing anything else with their time.

They chose this instead.

Good governance doesn't trend on social media. Nobody photographs a board meeting and calls it heroic.

But every ambulance that runs, every first aid course that happens, every community that gets help after a disaster, someone in a room like this one made sure the organisation could actually deliver it.

That's humanitarian work too.

Adi Davila Toganivalu and Mr Robin Yarrow have been part of the Fiji Red Cross Society for many years.

Today, as Honorary Members, they remain closely connected to the work and to the people carrying it forward.

You see that in the small things. A conversation after a meeting. A piece of advice offered from experience. A question that makes you stop and think. A willingness to keep giving their time, long after many would have stepped away.

Between them is a long history with the Movement — and the kind of knowledge that only comes from having been there, through different seasons, different challenges and different people.

This World Humanitarian Day, we are grateful for the people who have stayed close to the work, and whose years of service continue to matter.
