From the Kick-off Session in January, through the Bootcamp in March, and culminating in the Final Pitch and Graduation yesterday, the journey of the first cohort of the Kwera Startup Incubator Program has come to a remarkable close.

Bringing together 13 teams from 6 universities, the incubator equipped young innovators and entrepreneurs with the skills and tools to develop business ideas, tackle real-world challenges, and refine their ventures through ideation, testing, prototyping, and pitching.

The journey concluded with a Final Pitch session, where participants presented their ventures in a supportive environment focused on learning, feedback, growth, and continuous improvement. It was inspiring to see a diverse range of innovative solutions, from organic fertiliser production and solar-powered household water purification systems to other ventures addressing real-world challenges. Many of the ideas demonstrated a strong focus on value addition, sustainability, environmentally conscious solutions, and community impact.

A special thank you to Maya Husted Davidsen and Caroline Bøegh Salomonsen from Implement Consulting Group for their guidance and mentorship throughout the program. We also appreciate the encouragement shared during the closing session by Catharina Hogdal, who challenged participants to pitch in a way that ensures they are remembered long after they leave the pitch room.

Congratulations to the first cohort of the Kwera Startup Incubator Program on reaching this important milestone.

When life gets tough, we expect things to get better, not harder. For Bernadetta Chakhwantha, every challenge was met with another. After a difficult start at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences- MUBAS with motherhood, setbacks, and lost resources, she met Gefa Chalimba, a fellow Student Climber who introduced her to Kwera. With support from Kwera through a laptop, data bundle, tuition assistance and a supportive community, she kept going.

Her story is more than a graduation story. It is a story of resilience, hope, and a community that believed in her. 📽️Watch her journey.

Life gets easier when Student Climbers interact, check up on one another, and grow together, and that spirit shaped an interactive session held by Kwera Malawi Head of Programs, Richard Makala with the Student Climbers from University of Malawi - UNIMA after the recent graduation ceremony.

During the session, Richard encouraged students to work hard in school while also building strong meaningful relationships with fellow Student Climbers. He further urged them not to become idle, but to use their time productively by developing entrepreneurial mindsets, exploring opportunities, and growing beyond the classroom.

The gathering created an open and engaging space for students to discuss issues affecting them, share ideas, and interact freely with one another. Through conversations, encouragement, and shared experiences, the session reflected Kwera’s commitment to building a community where young people are empowered to grow, connect, and create impact beyond university life.

Under the theme “Beyond the Classroom: Mixing Academic Achievements With Future Aspirations,” the University of Malawi - UNIMA Kwera Students Community hosted a Galanta and Finale Farewell Function on 3 May 2026, bringing together students, finales, and invited guests for a day of inspiration and celebration.

The event featured poetry performances by Elfrida Paundi and Ben Matabwa, alongside a musical performance by Lyton Chirwa. Students also received guidance from invited speakers on transitioning from academic life into the professional world using the skills gained through school and Kwera programs.

Speaking on “Climb Past The Limits,” Esther Yolamu Pindani encouraged students to remain confident, build good habits, and proactively pursue opportunities even when they feel underqualified.

In his presentation themed “Living A Professional Life,” Mike Hago Kamanga, a Teaching and Research Assistant in the Economics Department at University of Malawi, encouraged students to embrace discipline and work hard, carry themselves with value, and seize opportunities. Drawing from his personal journey, he shared how he obtained two accounting diplomas while studying Economics at UNIMA and is currently in third year, pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Accountancy at Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences, barely a year after competing his Economics studies.

Guest of Honour Emmanuel Wellman Banda highlighted the impact of programs such as SBP, the Incubator Program, Female Entrepreneurship Training, and Holiday Work Experience in preparing students for life beyond school.

Speaking on behalf of the finales, Charity Kamanga thanked Kwera for the support rendered over the years and pledged that the students would put the acquired skills into practice. The event also included the presentation of certificates to the 2025–2026 student leaders.

Last Friday, Student Climbers at the Malawi University Of Science and Technology gathered for an exciting get-together aimed at equipping students with practical skills for life beyond the classroom. The event created a vibrant space for learning, interaction, entertainment, and networking in a relaxed and engaging atmosphere.

One of the key highlights was a session led by guest speaker Chinsisi Lemani, who shared practical insights on preparing for job interviews. She encouraged students to research organizations before interviews, communicate confidently, dress professionally, and arrive on time. She also emphasized the importance of understanding one’s CV and being able to clearly explain personal experiences and achievements. Her session concluded with an interactive question-and-answer discussion where students had the opportunity to seek further guidance and practical advice.

During the closing remarks, Emmanuel Wellman Banda emphasized that interview skills go beyond securing jobs, noting that entrepreneurs also require strong communication and presentation abilities to pitch ideas, build partnerships, and secure deals. He described interviews as opportunities to market oneself and communicate value effectively, encouraging students to intentionally build their CVs and personal profiles while still in university. He further stressed the importance of gaining practical experience through volunteering, leadership roles, and additional certifications, explaining that such opportunities help students translate theory into practical impact while giving them a competitive edge in interviews and other environments where they must prove their value to secure opportunities.

Beyond the educational sessions, the gathering also featured music performances by Pemphero, alongside drama, games, and other fun activities that made the event lively, interactive, and memorable for the students.
