Join Us for an Inspiring Conversation on Respite Care in Ukraine

We invite you on 16 April 2026 from 6 PM to 9 PM to explore the transformative work being done to support families and individuals with disabilities in Ukraine, especially in the challenging times of war and recovery.

In partnership with AMIS and with the invaluable support of CISU, the Ukrainian NGO Djerela has been at the forefront of providing essential respite care. This care offers vital relief to families navigating the complex realities of war and its aftermath.

Now, in collaboration with Architects Without Borders, this work is evolving into a groundbreaking project. We will present an exciting architectural vision aimed at creating inclusive, safe, and homelike spaces that prioritize dignity and well-being for people with disabilities.

This event will be hosted by Henrik Haubro from AMIS, Olha Maruda from Djerela and Anna Mircev from Architects without Borders.

Thank you to everyone who attended our event last night, “Evening Without Borders: An Architecture of Oppression” hosted by , . Your presence, engagement and commitment helped make the evening meaningful and impactful.

A special thank-you to our speakers and guests from the West Bank, and to Nishat Awan (via Architects for Gaza) for generously sharing their experiences and insights into how urban planning and architecture are tools of both oppression and resistance.

Heartfelt thanks go to the organisers, volunteers and everyone behind the scenes whose dedication brought this event together your hard work, care and attention made it possible.

How is urban planning used as a tool of repression in the West Bank? Learn more by meeting Palestinian architects and planners who talk about their life and work under Israeli occupation.
We look forward to inviting you to an evening where you can meet experienced Palestinian architects and urban planners, some of them civil servants, who fight daily against the violent consequences of illegal Israeli settlements and arbitrary restrictions on Palestinian freedom of movement. For example, did you know that Hebron, the largest city in the West Bank with over 200,000 inhabitants, currently has only one road in and out, controlled by the Israeli military?
We suggest watching the Oscar-winning documentary “No Other Land”, created in an Israeli-Palestinian collaboration, before the event. It can be seen for free on DR - link in bro

At the 2025 CAFx Biennale, Architects Without Borders invites you to an Evening Without Borders, where recent architecture graduates show how to trade quick fixes for patient, well-considered, empathetic solutions - and how time, proximity, and care can reshape design. The presentations will be followed by a panel discussion on architecture for the vulnerable, where we’ll explore what to pause, reuse, and relearn so we can create human-centric architecture that truly cares for people. We welcome everyone working at the intersection of design and human development to learn, share, and be inspired with us.

Meet our volunteers engaged in projects in places like Uganda, Tanzania, and Ukraine – from rooftop farming to community houses and new principles for mental health care.

Our team travelled to Ukraine in September to meet our partners, Djerela — a Ukrainian NGO and tight-knit community of families supporting people with intellectual disabilities.
Together, our goal is to renovate their transition home in Bohuslav and design it in a way that reflects belonging, support, and a home-like environment.
Over six days in Kyiv and Bohuslav, we explored Ukrainian cultural and architectural heritage and assessed the house’s condition.
Most importantly, we built a close bond with Djerela’s team and met and interviewed the residents of their current home.
Djerela stands for self-advocacy, community, and combating discrimination. Instead of institutionalisation, their members live in small care homes where staff become their second family.
Our project rests on three pillars: community-based care, personal growth, and quality of life. As a pilot project, it also aims to lay the design foundation for future homes across Ukraine.
