Join us on November 4th to hear about AUG’s 1:1 urban farming project in Kampala, Uganda.

Since 2024, we’ve explored rooftop hydroponics as a way for residents of Kinawataka to grow their own vegetables, alongside two local partner organisations.

Yuri Mamero and Alma Kober Sørensen will share the project’s challenges, learnings and successes, as well as what it means to volunteer with Architects Without Borders.

How can the buildings and spaces we already have support changing needs?

Join us for this years Day of Architecture, hosted by Arktiktforerningen, an evening of projects, conversations and insights into volunteering.

Inspired by this year’s theme “Preserve More”, we will explore how working with existing spaces and local resources can support communities and improve everyday lives.

We’ll begin with presentations of selected AUG projects, ranging from a respite care home in Bohuslav, Ukraine, supporting people with disabilities, to urban farming in Uganda, exploring ways to improve food security in informal settlements.

Afterwards, meet the people leading our projects for informal conversations about how we work, the challenges we encounter, and what it means to volunteer with AUG. Whether you’re a student, an experienced professional or simply curious, come and discover how your skills and engagement can make a difference.

Arkitekter Uden Grænser er skabt for at tilbyde arkitektfaglighed til udsatte mennesker og folkelige organisationer, der ikke har råd til at købe arkitekters ydelser.

At the beginning of July, three AUG volunteers, Thomas Käszner, Aleksander Kongshaug and Anna Mircsev joined Engineers Without Borders for a six-day trip to Ukraine as part of the Build Back Green Ukraine programme.
In Mykolaiv, the team continued work on the Construction College, where the goal is to create an inspiring learning environment for architecture students who hope to contribute to rebuilding Ukraine.
In Voznesensk, the focus is on two projects: housing for internally displaced people, with around 280 families currently waiting for homes, and the Entrepreneurial House, which will support local production, entrepreneurs and economic growth.
Step by step, these projects are helping build a more resilient future for local communities. 🇺🇦

On August 13, the Danish Architects’ Association will host the seminar “Build Back Better – Rebuilding Ukraine.” Architects Without Borders will participate with a keynote presentation on our ongoing projects in the country.

Since 2024, we’ve been piloting rooftop hydroponic farms in Kinawataka, Kampala, turning unused tin roofs into productive green spaces that improve food security, generate income, and provide cooling shade.

Together with ACTogether Uganda and the local community, three pilot structures are now in their second harvest. As we collect data and refine the model, we’re working toward expanding rooftop farming across the settlement and exploring its wider impact on the local microclimate.

TCDC Tanzania project, which has worked to improve the physical conditions at a college near Arusha in Tanzania: Training Centre for Development Cooperation. TCDC is owned by the Danish development organization Mellemfolkeligt Samvirke and was designed by Danish architects in the late 1960s. Today, the college is a hub for development training and education in East Africa and thus indirectly supports the building of civil society in the region. We have designed a brand new assembly hall and also advised on building renovation. We have recently handed over the sketch project to TCDC, which is now working to raise funds for the realization. On this evening, the team will talk about how they approached the task, about their research trip to Tanzania and show the finished project.

Community-based care home in Ukraine
Architects Without Borders Denmark, AMIS – A More Inclusive Society Denmark, and Djerela Ukraine are working together to create a community-based care home for people with intellectual disabilities. This project will serve as a base for a pilot in Ukraine and across Europe for future developments. It involves the renovation of a permanent residential care home for an organization that has supported people with intellectual disabilities since 1994.
Global scope and collaboration of the project

The project in Bohuslav is more than a renovation — it is a pilot model for future inclusive homes across Ukraine and Europe. Developed through international collaboration, it creates a flexible design guide that can be adapted to different sites, communities, and needs. The project is designed as a practical tool for future developments, based on the needs of residents
with intellectual disabilities. The result is not only a renovation plan, but a comprehensive design guide covering landscape, exterior, and interior transformation. It brings together three organisations, each playing a vital role in supporting people with intellectual disabilities in Ukraine.

Our two team have just completed draft proposals for projects in Tanzania and Ukraine.

On this evening we will hear from the team behind the TCDC Tanzania project, which has worked to improve the physical conditions at a college near Arusha in Tanzania: Training Centre for Development Cooperation.
We will then hear from a team that has just completed a draft proposal for a renovation of a house in the Ukrainian town of Bohuslav, which will be converted into a respite home for families with mentally disabled family members.
