What does everyday life look like during a winter of blackouts in Kyiv?

Based on conversations between seventeen women during the winter of 2022–23, “Women in the Dark” tells a story of life without electricity, internet or heating — but also of dark humour, hope and friendship.

After the performance, join LIBERECO in writing postcards to Ukrainians held in Russian prisons and occupied territories. 💌

Ukrainian independence is about more than the creation of a state. It is about the right of Ukrainians to determine their own future, preserve their identity and culture, and live in freedom and democracy.
From the struggle for independence in 1917–1921, through decades of Soviet repression, to the Orange Revolution, the Revolution of Dignity and Russia’s ongoing war of aggression, Ukrainians have continued to defend these rights.

On 24 August, we will join the NGO Empowering Ukraine protest march in Berlin to stand with Ukraine and remind the world of the more than 16,000 Ukrainian civilians illegally detained by Russia.

What does Ukrainian Independence Day have to do with human rights?
For Ukrainians, independence means the right to choose their own future, protect their identity and culture, and live in freedom.
Throughout Ukraine’s history, these rights have been challenged and defended. From Soviet repression and the struggle for independence to the Orange Revolution, the Revolution of Dignity and Russia’s ongoing war of aggression.

In the rural communities around Bakota, many older people and children experience isolation and have few opportunities to connect.

Our partner NGO Territory is changing that by bringing residents of a local care home together with children from nearby villages through creative workshops. What begins with making things together can grow into conversations, connection — and even friendships that continue beyond the workshops.

Am 29. August kommt „Frauen im Dunkeln“ für eine einmalige Aufführung ins Gallus Theater Frankfurt.

Basierend auf offenen Gesprächen mit siebzehn Frauen in Kyjiw während der Stromausfälle im Winter 2022/23 erzählt das Stück vom Leben ohne Strom, Internet und Heizung – aber auch von schwarzem Humor, Freundschaft und Hoffnung.

Im Anschluss a die Aufführung laden LIBERECO - Partnership for Human Rights und IGFM zu einem Postkarten-Workshop ein – als Zeichen der Solidarität mit Ukrainerinnen und Ukrainern, die in russischen Gefängnissen festgehalten werden oder in den besetzten Gebieten leben.

Gemeinsam senden wir eine einfache Botschaft: Ihr seid nicht vergessen.

On World Humanitarian Day, we want to say thank you.

Together with our Ukrainian partners, we keep supporting people affected by war — from delivering humanitarian aid and supporting Children’s Spaces in Dnipro and Kharkiv to helping repair damaged homes and providing essential medical care.

None of this would be possible without our partners, volunteers and supporters.

Last weekend, the LIBERECO – Partnership for Human Rights team took part in the “New Belarus” conference in Warsaw, bringing together representatives of Belarusian democratic forces and civil society, activists, former political prisoners, and international partners.

Six years of repression have not destroyed Belarusian civil society — nor erased the choice Belarusians made in 2020.

Among the key participants were Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya Святлана Ціханоўская leader of Belarus’s democratic forces; Pavel Latushka Павел Латушка , a former diplomat and representative of the Belarusian democratic movement; and Ivonka Survilla , President of the Rada of the Belarusian Democratic Republic and a longstanding symbol of Belarusian national democratic resistance.

Discussions focused on democratic change and political transition, cooperation with Ukraine, the release and support of political prisoners, the resilience of civil society, the role of the Belarusian diaspora, international solidarity, and the future strategy of the democratic forces.
